Help!! Don’t know what to eat!

Recommended Posts

Hello! So I am almost 9 weeks out from the sleeve and I am having trouble eating. I’m at the regular diet stage but everything I try to eat I either don’t like it or I am terrified of it getting “stuck” and possibly vomiting(which I’ve been able to avoid thus far). I think my fear of getting sick is getting in the way of me eating and I’m definitely not getting the amount of Protein in which I should. I’m pretty much just eating yogurt and cheddar cheese sticks and some Soup occasionally. I want things but I just don’t want to get sick! Can you guys please help with suggestions on things I can eat?? I spoke with my NUT but it’s very generic, tuna, fish, ground meat, etc. I don’t like tuna or fish, and ground meat has become icky to me. I hate to complain and I’m super happy with my decision I’m just so stuck with what to eat because I know I’m not having enough. Please help! Thank you!

At 9 weeks, I was eating regular food with the exception of raw veggies. I usually started my day with a Protein Shake so that I got a big Protein boost at the beginning of the day, but eventually switched to greek yogurt. Even now I don't eat a lot of raw veggies because they fill me up and I don't have room for the protein.

If you're afraid of getting stuck, try soft foods for a while until you get the hang of it. Soft scrambled eggs? Beans? Lentils? chicken (dark meat is moister, but I didn't have trouble with white meat). I think I even had steak, cooked medium and chewed well.

The key to not getting that "stuck" feeling is chewing very well and not eating foods that will expand in your stomach (pasta, rice, bread).

*If you know you're not getting enough protein, I suggest continuing with protein supplements until you get the hang of how to eat with your new stomach.

I'm 6 1/2 week and eat mostly Protein (chicken, ground turkey, shrimp - lots of shrimp, steak, etc) and occasionally sauteed zucchini or a tiny spinach salad w/ blue cheese and a few slices of strawberry and a tiny bit of goddess dressing. The trick is to eat slowly and chew the heck out of everything. I can feel when I'm getting full so I know when to stop. I drink a premier nutrition shake for Breakfast every morning.

-Sliced deli meat wrapped in string cheese

-boiled eggs

-cottage cheese and your fav fruit

-shrimp and cocktail sauce from trader joes

You shouldn't worry about making yourself sick and throwing up, as long as u eat slow and dont over stuff yourself and you should be fine! Your for sure overthinking it! [emoji4]Lol

You should go on pinterest and get ideas, they have alot of cool stuff

eggs are a go to for breakfast with a slice of cheese. I'll cook some beef usually in the slow cooker so it's super soft. chicken on a hot grill or pan for a quick sear then slow cooked in some type of liquid. You can cube the chicken prior to cooking it, cut it up after or shred it. The beef or chicken will be dinner for the family one night of the week then I'll work on the leftovers for the rest of the week. shakes are still big part of my diet, I'll have either one or two in a day. I do not eat any kind of seafood either and I tried ground beef a couple of weeks ago and it didn't work out well at all so I have stayed away from it. The chicken and beef work out just fine for me. Good Luck!!!!!

Thanks everyone! I most likely am overthinking too much. This all sounds amazing but I'm def still nervous. My NUT told me not to eat shrimp because its too chewy/tough, which was a bummer cause I really wanted shrimp. I would like to try steak, I tried shaved beef and it broke up well and wasn't chewy at all but I was scared to swallow it because I thought it was too dry. I can eat scrambled eggs but boiled eggs in an egg salad seemed to make my stomach make a bunch of noises and I felt weird so I haven't tried again. Maybe I'm having trouble moistening whatever meats I try. I'm not sure but I hope I can get past this fear of getting sick or stuck. I'm going to try and incorporate atlas a shake too, although I kind of hated them. Such a bummer!! It's great to hear that everyone is eating well and for the most part having no trouble, hopefully this motivates me

Try the things you want in small amounts. That way you will know if they don't agree with you and may make you vomit. I've had an issue twice. Once was with the ground beef. I don't know what went wrong. It may have been too greasy, I may have eaten to fast or too much. I didn't puke until about 45 mins later when I went to have a drink of Water. First sip was fine, second sip I couldn't even swallow. The feeling hit me right away and I had to b-line for the trash can. Second time was with pork ribs. This time it went down fine but after the 3rd bite my mouth started salivating like crazy and the nausea hit fast. Same b-line maneuver to the trash can. I've had dry meat and it's been rough going down but never an issue after that.

Have you actually gotten sick or had food get stuck when you've eaten or is it that you are just scared of that happening?

Not to sound mean or harsh, but if you're cooking shrimp correctly it should NEVER be chewy or tough. I tend to cook my shrimp and scallops (IMO the two most delicates) to Med / med well. both should almost melt when cut with a fork.

I agree you are over thinking :)

I have never had an issue with anything getting stuck, or making me ill from the beginning. I eat everything, steak, shrimp, raw veggies.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
