Hello. I'm new. I think I'm failing...

Hi Guys. Hope you're all well? I need some help please. I had my VSG on the 23 July 2018 and since then have lost 13kgs. I have another 20kgs to go but the weight has just stalled.

I started feeling hungry about 5 days post surgery and even though I stuck to my diet, still sticking to it, the weight loss is slow and now non-existent. I'm terrified that I won't lose anymore weight it's really stressing me out and this hunger thing is awful.

I am taking in my Water and Protein so I'm wondering what's happening?!? Any advice?

What amounts of Water and Protein are you getting each day?
What's your starting weight, Height, Age, ETC required to find out your BMI?
Are you tracking your intakes? What is your average caloric intake per day?

So I'm averaging about 600 calories a day that includes my Protein Shake, getting about 50gr per day. I'm getting between 1.3 to 1.5litres of Water. I started at 93 and now I'm at 80kg, 35 and yes I'm tracking my caloric intake... my height is 5ft3

Just remember those that start off at a lower weight, don't lose as much or as fast as those that start with a much higher weight. You went from 93-80 KG (205.03 LBS to 176.37 LBS) that's a pretty decent drop, that's a 13.97% drop in body weight. That's not something to scoff at.

Your calorie and Water intake is kinda low. You really want to be closer to 3-4 liters of water a day and 1000 calories a day this far out from surgery.

What's your doctors saying about your intakes?

Ok, first off, those that start off at a lower weight, don't lose as much or as fast as those that start with a much higher weight. You went from 93-80 KG (205.03 LBS to 176.37 LBS) that's a pretty decent drop, that's a 13.97% drop in body weight. That's not something to scoff at.

My Doctor is being quite good and patient with mu panicked queries. He says not to worry although when I spoke to him yesterday he wanted me to cut down on my calories, something I sort of balked at, because I was at a loss what to cut out and I'm also working out for about an hour everyday :/ I just wonder if someone else has experienced something similar because it's a bit discouraging.

That's counter intuitive, when you are working out, you need MORE calories to support the workout. Less is really doing to drive your body into conservation mode. Most doctors and research I've seen has shown that a modest increase in calories can actually help with weight loss.

Hi there

When you say the weightloss has stopped - for how long? 13kg in 6 or so weeks is AMAZING! But stalls happen. If you search you will find literally hundreds of threads about stalls - and a stall can go from three days to a month or so - but at that calorie level (and I agree, 80p or so is probably wise.

Pick up your Protein and the healthy calories will lift a bit) you will start losing again. And also - make sure you are measuring. I pretty much always find that it is in a stall that I suddenly lose inches - drop a pants size or shirt size!

Be patient. It will resume...

Thank you. I guess I'm just worried about the stall bit. It's immensely frustrating and I guess seeing people who have lost their weight (which they say was effortless) is making me anxious. [emoji21]

Stalls are going to happen, no matter what. I'd question someone who said it was "effortless".

It really helps to look at the big picture. :)

I don't know if this helps, but a true stall can last 3+ weeks. If it's just a few days or a week that you see nothing, that can be other things. Stool building up in your system. Water retention do to various reasons. My monthly affects my weigh ins. If I weigh frequently, I can easily get frustrated. But if I weigh every couple of weeks I can usually see more "real" weight loss without the panic from frequent scale trips. Mr. MattZ knows what he's talking about too. You need to eat to lose weight. Your body is sooo good at surviving that if it thinks you are in a famine it will preserve you--for a time--by slowing you down. In comes lethargy, tiredness, less ooomph to get up and move. Keep up your exercise, count your calories and improve your Protein intake and water. I don't really believe in counting calories, but if loss is not happening, then you have to do it. Don't forget, that bites of food count. Some people tend to discredit the destructive power of nibbling too. Check yourself on that one. Bites add up over the whole day.

I would say that stress is your worst enemy though. Fear that you are failing, fear that you are eating too much, fear that you are going too slow all makes for a more terrible experience. Try to lift that yoke and practice doing what you know is right. Good healthy meals and Snacks under 300 calories with a good ratio of protein/carb/fat. I like doing 3 200 calorie meals and 2 100 calorie snacks. There is some wiggle room there for a little more during meal time.

Hey! We have the same surgery date. I just experienced last week a "stall" where I lost 1 lb. I was mortified. The stall ended though on day 7. I'm consuming about the same amount as calories as you and I too work out 1hr at least a day. I also add in 10000 steps a day so I'm moving during the day alot. The only difference I see is that I consume over 70G of Protein a day up to 80g. I eat fish alot, it's high in protein and low in fat. For Breakfast I stick with Egg whites which is high protein too. I will also add a scoop of plain protein to my yogurt Snacks to bump it up. When I don't have at least 70g of protein I am STARVING. My nutritionist told me it's because I'm working out hard and more active than most. So if you like fish, it's a great protein option. I am down 46lbs since surgery ....and I started heavier than you so honestly I think you are right on par with where you should be weight wise. Try the protein increase and see if the hunger goes away (it should).

Hey surgery twin [emoji2] so happy to hear of your progress. Thank you for sharing your advice and routine, much appreciated. I try to do 10k steps a day but because I have a 'tied to the office desk job I get there when I incorporate my gym workouts. I'm eating mostly fish or chicken with most meals so trying to get that up. Protein Shakes make me violently ill (all brands that we get in Kenya) BUT I can tolerate Gold Standard so trying to work my way up to 2 servings rather than just one. I really appreciate the support and encouragement. Hope you're doing really well and I'll touch base in a week or two [emoji120]

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
