October 2018 Sleevers

Question - I'm walking a couple times a day. I was measuring by the laps around my row of townhomes. I've now put on my fitbit, but not sure if I should set step goals or what they should be. How is everyone setting their walking goals after surgery (I'm not yet a week out). Thanks!

Hiya, add your scoop of Protein to a little bit of cold Water, mix it till it dissolves then add it to your food otherwise it will clump in warm food.

Im day 5 post op. I’ve had a roughish road. My blood pressure dropped out in the hospital and they wouldn’t let me try to walk again until day 2. Then I struggled with the anesthesia, nausea and overproduction of saliva. That lasted until yesterday. I feel like I’m trying so hard to get the liquid in. Every sip hurts to swallow. If I try my hardest I’ll probably get 34oz in today. I feel dehydrated and way behind the “schedule”. Any advise?

I was sleaved on the 29th also. So you are not alone! This message board has been a real life saver. My doctor prescribed an anti-nauseous medication. I only had to take it twice, but it really helped.

I was sleeved on October 30th, and this message board has really helped me too. I have felt alone too, everything revolves around food! My family was watching a movie and they were eating pizza, and I had to leave. When you are feeling alone get on here and read, text and then you won’t feel so alone.

Sleeved on 10/2 and still this far out some days I sake up feeling slightly nauseous (never thrown up but more like sick at the thought of trying to eat) and light headed. Anyone else experiencing this?

My sips hurt too if I swallow to hard and I'm tense. I now sip slowly and relax with every sip. It works. I feel I was just overthinking it and would tighten up my stomach before I sip. My doctor let me go home with drinking only half of the 64. I'm now doing a lot better. Just take your time and relax. You can do it

Yes, I have had similar feelings. Just empty and not interested in getting the ball rolling for the day but once I do it all subsides.

I had my surgery on 10/26. I only told my closest friends and immediate family. They are all very supportive. Not everyone needs to know. People can be judgmental and who needs that ... what is most important is you did what was right for you. It is your personal journey. I had someone at work ask me what type of surgery I was having and basically told them it was none of their business besides it was a HIPPA violation for her to even ask and since we are not friends I didn't have an issue with telling her to back off :)

I haven’t made the ricotta bake this way yet. I intend to take any of the ricotta bake recipes online and just add a layer of puréed butternut squash and maybe a layer of puréed spinach.

This is the Pasta Sauce I make (reduce/eliminate sugar after surgery). I make a smaller batch and freeze in about half cup increments. For purée/soft food stage, I’ll run it through a blender.

I wake up hungry (so I guess the opposite of nauseated), most mornings, @Oct517, but I end up a little nauseated after like half of my meals. Like you, I've never thrown up from it (though I was uncareful with some sliced roast beef last night, and it was a near thing), but it's awful. My body isn't consistently giving me a "full" signal, so I think I end up eating just a little more than I should, or something?

Anyway, any other time I have nausea it's almost always dehydration. A sugar free popsicle often clears it right up. I wonder if getting a little beverage in you right after you wake up would help?

I've heard people say they stick to Protein Shakes, or smoothies, or some other liquid for Breakfast well after surgery, and I wonder if they're going through the same kind of thing you are.

I know that liquid in the morning helps me. I wake feeling hollow or empty, even though I don't feel the normal version of "hungry". And when I'm eating, the uncomfortable full feeling, like you just had three plates of Thanksgiving food, is the difference of one small baby-spoon bite. I've been lucky to have no nausea since I was in the hospital.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
