"morbidly Obese" since childhood

Recommended Posts

And PugM9m234 that would be one time when" go play outside with your friends more" might be valid. But the portion that bothers me? Why should any 8 year old be exposed. to the loathing and discrimination of fat-shaming? It is bad to hear it on the playground but from adults in a position of trust? All I really, would say to them?" Shame on you! This is a small human being with feelings, not a glob of Silly Putty. YOU really owe HER an apology for your actions."
You see I too have been there, gone through similar things When I was that age I didn't hear exactly that. I was d***** with faint praise. Our family doctor , Dr Shamansky , turned to my mother and said "YOU,know your daughter has soft flesh", at this time I was high- normal size, tall but normal," This means SHE will grow up to be fat!" That too is a rotten statement, I was fated to,be,obese later in life? Why didn't he tell Mama I was going to have PCOS while he was at it? Onle reason he didn't was I was Peri-puberty not completely into it yet. And they hadn't come,up with the term yet.
Sorry for the rant, it uncovered a sore nerve I thought I had buried.
We soak in a lot of scorn, trying to keep the peace and have people "like" us.

Looking back, it is really sad. Being in healthcare now, I don’t think I would approach the subject the same way with an 8 year old. I agree, “go play outside” or “what activities do you like?” would be much more fitting. I think the biggest thing I learned is some people (doctors more specially) don’t know how to bring up the topic without being judgmental. I had a primary care dr ( I must have been 18) walk in to the exam room, not say hello, and tell me I need to have “the surgery”. He went on and on for about 15 minutes about how I NEED to have it done. It honestly turned me away from surgery for a long time.

Your rant, is how I feel now, at 28. I wouldn’t ever tell my son he is fat and needs to diet. In all honesty, I try not to make any comments about my body in front of him.

Sorry, I went off on a tangent there.

No harm, no foul you have a friend at Chase Manhatten-ME! The most wonderful 🎁gift anyone can give a child, a future
adult is to love them unconditionally as they are. And what a wonderful. gift,to you it will be if someday your son can and will say." I know I always was Loved" Aw Shoot I'm crying too, I did have a son once tell me that, and then he suddenly died at 31, my arms are now empty but that still burns warmly in my heart of hearts , with all my,other failings I was blessed to be my Kevin's Mom.

Anyone here been "morbidly obese" since childhood and never been a normal weight in their life?

Yes - I started piling on the pounds at 5 years old. I recall being 180-190lbs at 13 years old - US size 14. I was put on diets constantly and forced to be active, but I kept on getting bigger and bigger. My parents would shout at me in frustration as they didn't understand why my weight kept creeping up.

There were Snacks all over the house - my parents were and for the most part have always been of average weight, or at most 15lbs overweight. I don't think they thought for a second they'd end up with a morbidly obese daughter. Especially, my dad, he was and still is very athletic. He was a Judo Instructor, he swims, cycles go to spinning class, runs 5k and 10k marathons - he's also done a triathlon.

I am an only child, and I think the degree of loneliness I felt growing up as an only child drove me to overeat and overindulge in video games - 16-hour gameplay. Waking up at the crack of dawn and not resting until 11 pm.

I had some good times, but I honestly think I was depressed between the age of 10-15 years old most definitely.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
