Still difficult to eat meat

Recommended Posts

I will be 2 months one week post op next week. I am still having difficulty eating meat unless its blended into Soup. chicken seems to be the hardest for me and always makes me feel nauseous. the only meat I seem to be able to handle is a soft meat ball made of ground beef. I tried tuna and its ok but I don't really love it. Shrimp is OK too if you count seafood as 'meat'

At what stage in your gastric sleeve post op were you able to eat meat generally? Sometimes I wonder if I am 'normal' in this regard

pork chop still sits kinda off with me. If i keep the amount very small and use lots of time to chew i can handle it ok.

other meats sit better but they each took a different amount of time before i didn't have issues with them.

just keep testing new meats at different times and it will get better with time

I’m 18 days post op and now eating puree. I am allowed tuna and chicken with low fat mayo and other fish. Sometimes I feel like it gets stuck in my stomach but most times it’s okay. I can’t wait to eat a meatball again someday.

soft meats like mince and soft-cooked chicken were fine for me from around week 3 post op. Some people have real issues with chicken, and I wonder if it's because chicken can become quite dry and chewy with most traditional cooking methods when ensuring it's cooked all the way through (to avoid risk of salmonella and other food-born illness). I slow-cook my chicken in a sous-vide hot Water bath for 4-6 hours so it's always fully cooked and soft but never over-heated and remains really moist.

After a couple of weeks for things like tuna or dark chicken. It's a big YMMV thing for us all.

Dark meat poultry usually works better than white meat - the extra fat helps it go down easier. High quality steak like filet often works better than ground beef, which is usually cheaper tougher cuts ground up. Seafood is usually considered easier than beef or poultry and is often considered a 'soft food', though it's not really my thing. Having it in Soup or a sauce (aka, 'meat lube') usually makes it go down easier.

Good luck, and it does get better, even if one is on the slower side of progress.

They say beef is the most difficult to digest, try ground turkey. Makes for a good taco.

Seven years out and chicken is the hardest thing for me to eat (except for salmon and tuna, which I can't eat at all). I can eat dark meat chicken if it's very moist or has a sauce; white meat is way harder. The easiest Proteins for me are shrimp, scallops, and crab followed by beef, ham (with applesauce, usually) other pork, lamb, eggs, and deli turkey. Eat what you can keep down, it gets boring sometimes but you can vary the spices and the prep techniques. My tolerance for foods varies from day to day and I've learned that if something feels "wrong" to my stomach to stop eating it or vomiting /slimies will follow.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
