Up to this point the only thing that has made me nauseous was my pain meds in the beginning. All of a sudden today I feel so sick to my stomach. I couldn't get down my Protein Shake and the thought of eating makes me want to throw up and I'm pretty sure I will if I do eat. Has anyone else experienced this out of the blue? Is t his normal or should I call the doctor?

I had the exact same thing happen to me at Week 4.

For one, I had become intolerant of whey Protein. So my Protein Shakes, protein ater, Protein Bars made me extremely nauseous.

Once I eliminated whey protein, I still had intermittent nausea, and a dull grinding type pain in my stomach. But this was only when it was empty. Drinking Water exacerbated the dull pain. I talked to my surgeon's PA about it. She told me it wasn't uncommon and would fade over time. And she was right. First the nausea stopped, and slowly the stomach ache became less and less frequent.

I had a similar experience in that same time frame. Mine was to all foods. I called it a food aversion, but it was more of just an extreme lack of appetite. I remember going to the grocery store and feeling nauseous and wondering if I would ever be able to eat again. This of course passed within another couple weeks. The one piece of advice I can give is, forgive your body and remember it won't always be this way. Even if you get sick on a certain food, don't give up on it. I tried foods again 2-3 times before knowing that it was something I could or couldn't eat. I used prescription nausea medication, and still to this day occasionally, when it got bad.

It had not crossed my mind t hat I could be allergic to the Protein, but now that I have investigated it a bit, I bet that's the problem. What did you use instead of the whey protein isolate?

Mostly I use Muscle Milk Pro premade shakes. It uses casein as the main protein source, and doesn't bother me.

I also use Medifast shakes made with milk, when I am traveling. They are soy protein based. I hate how expensive they are, but when made with milk the Dutch chocolate actually tastes pretty good.

I'm in the middle of week 4 and having the same problem. shakes, Water, food-it all makes me nauseous. I was going to try an Iron free Multivitamin for a week to see if that could be the culprit. If so I'll need to switch up how I get my iron. Plus it's been super hot here in Texas ( think 7th ring of hell)-food is the last thing I want to think about.

I'm not alone!! I had vomited for three days straight and had to go to the ER it got so bad. I'm on my third week also. They didn't find anything critical so they let me go home. This afternoon I'm meeting with my bariatric team to see what might be going on. I can't even handle strong smells and had to give up all my medications and vitamins!

Between weeks 3-12, a lot of folks go through a stage of general intolerance, plus residual inflammation/stricture-esque issues that don't always happen immediately after surgery and take time to manifest. I got off whey Proteins and that was the only thing that helped resolve my issues. I switched to fairlife milk + sugar free strawberry or chocolate Syrup to replace Protein Shakes, and it made all the difference in the world. Under my doctor's orders, I also ate Peanut Butter covered crackers for a couple of weeks. Because I was getting anxiety/stress over eating and anticipating the nausea/vomiting/aversion to come, he felt like the familiar taste of a snack I always liked would help me re-learn to tolerate food. He was right.

Staying in touch with your doc and working with a nutritionist is always best.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
