$42,000 for my surgery!!!!!!!! My insurance had contracted about $12,000 which makes a heck of a lot more sense! How can hospitals get away with charging so much? Just one of the many things wrong with medical care in this country!

The cost for my sleeve is 11,100.00. I thought it was high before I seen everyone else's cost. Who can afford self pay WOW!

I’m 7 years out. I was the first sleeve done in my local hospital. I think I pause $1200 out of pocket and about 42,000 for the entire thing. But I had to do 6 months of office visits, psych, nutritionist and exercise program. I was in the hospital 3 days and had 2 post op follow ups. I also have unlimited access for life to the weight loss people. So I consider that a worthwhile cost.

My insurance denied some of my claims due to a misspelling of my name so a bill popped into my account for $99,000 ish. Obviously they are reprocessing it with my name spelled directly but that was a shock to see! Here's my itemized bill.

My bill before insurance was $146,000. For a traditional DS, hiatal hernia repair, gall bladder removal and appendectomy. The insurance paid like $58,000. My out of pocket was $1500.

Mine was $28,000 with tons of other bills in the thousands prior to surgery.

Insurance paid for the whole shebang for me, so I never saw an itemized list or anything, but at the pre-class, the estimated number they were telling people was $26,000, and that was with the discount for self-payers, I believe. I wouldn't be surprised if it was $40,000-something for insurance. They had me stay in the hospital for three days and the doctor came by to check up on me each day, along with like six different nurses about thirty times a day. It was never-ending (especially when I had those leg things on and couldn't get up on my own when I needed to use the bathroom), so I'm sure they got a pretty penny for it. But, I mean, if the insurance company is willing to pay them...

I'd never have been able to afford it self-pay though.

Because they can. All insurance companies have different contracted rates so medical facilities charge whatever they want to maximize the amount they actually receive.

It’s inflated pricing which is why people can afford self pay because those costs are not inflated. My sleeve will cost me only $11,800. But it would be billed as three times that if I was using insurance.

That a bunch of bs mine was $19,000 here in Dallas Tx

I had the sleeve 6/5/18 and just got my bill yesterday, thank God I have insurance that covered it, mine was $75,000.. and I only had to pay $6 and that was from the pharmacy for my take home meds so I didn't have to stop anywhere on the way home to get them filled

So probably none of you know about specialized hearing devices but I have a titanium bolt 4mm in my skull. Fun the reason for this is it attaches to a sound processor that allows me to hear like a super human. But for the bolt and the processor combined it’s 14,000 that doesn’t count or fee dr fee anesthesia which honestly they should have just numbed my skull cus I was awake for half of it anyway

why so much? I agree with Matt definitely ask for an itemized list of charges because that’s a little high.. typically it ranges from 6,000-15,000 . Here in CT is $11,000 and that’s at a center of excellence hospital.. which is one of the requirements for insurance to be even billed.

I consider what I paid well worth it. I have lifetime access to the dietitians. Plus they have a weight loss support group that is free.

I have heard of people paying less. However, I had mine done in 2010. So the sleeve was new to being accepted by insurance. I was the very first person sleeved in by my doctor.

I had conworkers who paid double that in years before me for the rue n y bypass.

Remember the more a doctor preforms the surgery and the more it becomes the medical norm the cheaper the procedures become.

My surgery was 110000 for less then 18hrs in the hospital.

Well in my state the reimbursement rate for people on state aid is horrid, hence the overcharging of people with insurance - not exactly a great way to recoup money, but our state requires all insurance to cover bariatric surgery. People on state aid insurance pay a whopping $386. I pay insurance premiums plus deductible, plus meet out of pocket cap - about $7800 total for the year (last year) - surgery total was over 60,000 billed to insurance.
