Did anyone else’s doctor tell them a pre-op diet is not necessary?

Recommended Posts

Nope, no weight loss requirement. Just dont eat or drink past midnight night before surgery.

My ex. doctor just wanted patients to eat low carb high Protein and then clear liquid the day before, I found this out just before he kicked me to the curb. Current doctor, liquid diet before, length of time depends on BMI and physical condition. Any Help?

For those who did not do a pre-op diet, did you doctor tell you to eat in any specific way? Were you supposed to lose weight before surgery anyway?

No to both. My insurance approval and surgery came very quickly. So I used the time to have food funerals, and I'm grateful I got that chance.

I would be cautious.

i believe everyone does a pr op, depending how much you wiegh

part of it is to reduce liver, the other part is to mentally prepare you to drinking food post op.

how much do you weigh?

be careful

I didn’t have to do a diet either. I believe they have you on a diet to shrink your liver.

I’m 10 months post op and the pre op diet is very important. Acclimate to your new lifestyle and If you can’t stick to that diet you will be miserable post up

I will have a 4-week low-calorie pre-op diet specifically geared toward liver shrinkage. Here are the requirements:

Breakfast: 1 Protein Shake paired with fruit or vegetables

Lunch: 1 Protein shake paired with fruit or vegetables

Snack: 1 low-fat dairy snack paired with fruit or vegetables

Dinner: 3oz. lean protein, 1 serving whole grain, and vegetables

Also, the dietician also said the Protein Shakes should contain:

less than 200 calories

greater than 25g protein

less than 10g of sugar

She specifically recommended Premier Protein shakes. I know they are less expensive other places, but I wanted to get the nutrition information to ensure they would meet the requirements. I have yet to try this brand, but chocolate is my favorite flavor of other brands, especially Adkins.

I think the pre op diet was more for my own discipline. There are numerous studies that if shown that the liquid diet is not the most effective way to reduce the liver but it is the least intrusive and this most practical. One example is here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4709363/. But any decrease in size is a good thing in my opinion. I think the huge variation in surgeon requirements stems from a lot of things like the surgeon’s comfort level and what each surgeon has become accustomed to. I mean honestly, my surgeon didn’t know what my liver size was before surgery so who knows how much smaller it got in one week.

My pre-op diet will be 2 meals (mostly lean Protein, some veggies) and 2 Protein Shakes for 2 weeks and Clear Liquids the day before. I asked my surgeon about the dreaded 2 week Protein Shake pre-op diet and he said that he only requires this pre-op diet when patients have very high BMIs.

I think that it's very helpful to learn about others' experiences, but can also be concerning when one person's experience differs greatly from another's. I wouldn't worry too much :) However, if you're still worried you could develop and follow your own low calorie/high protein diet pre-op diet.

For me, I'm okay with the requirements set by my surgeon. Some say it takes 21 days to form a habit and for me it's repetition. Besides, the more I lose pre-op, the less I have to lose post-op, right?

My pre-op diet was 7 days with only liquids, Jello and broth. I'm on my 4th day. It's been hard but it seems to be getting better. I've lost 5 pounds. 3 more days to go then surgery!

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
