December Surgery Dates

Recommended Posts

My nurse looked at me like I was crazy when I asked about gasx. She said there was no way I would need anything for the gas, that it would go away on it's own.

I listened for about 6 hours....then I had hubby go to Walmart for the strips. I was eating them like candy the first couple of days. I never went over the recommended limit but I pushed it to the max.

After about 3 days I tapered off on the gasx. The shoulder pain lasted another 3 or so.

Congrats on your band and we hope to hear great things....

Steph

Ask your nurse if it is better for you to explode?!? I would not have made it without Gas X strips!! I noticed the gas pains subsiding about day 8 or 9.

I had my surgery on Wednesday and I think it went as well as it could have gone. Even though I had only ingested Lortab and tiny sips of Water, I did have several episodes of vomiting that afternoon despite the antinausea patch they had placed behind my ear. Once I started using Phenergan suppositories:o, that was all gone.

I suffered the gas pains, but the Gas-X really helped, I believe. I am still sore in my right upper back, but I have decided that those pains are due to my hunching over to protect my incisions. Now that I am making a conscious effort to stand all the way up, that pain is starting to subside.

About the left chest/shoulder pain, my doctor warned me about that ahead of time and basically said, "You'll think you're having a heart attack, but you're not." (He did also explain what a real heart attack would feel like.) He said it's referred pain from the diaphragm (the brain perceives it as shoulder pain instead of the diaphragm for some reason).

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd check back in, haven't felt like being on the computer much this week. Day 5 post op and I'm feeling fairly good now. Still not ready to run a marathon. I've had a really rough week, not much pain with the incisions, just the dreaded "gas" pains. I feel kinda like I've got a broken rib or something. But like I said, doing better today. I haven't been out of the house since I had my surgery on Monday but I plan to go watch my grandkids in their Christmas Program at church tomorrow if possible. Still definitely no regrets at getting this done. Good luck to all of you MERRY LOSERS!!

I am doing pretty well actually. Minimal pain except for getting up and down- Sitting on the toilet is the worst but even that is getting better. I have been walking quite a bit (400 steps 4 times a day is my current goal).

Right after surgery, I kept trying to throw up but they gave me lots of anti-nausea and then put a patch on my ear for when I came home. Haven't had problems since even during my hour and half car ride home.

My doc said gas-x wouldnt help either but oh my gosh it makes you feel so much better!! I also tried the pepermint tea someone recommened on here and that helped too.

Mostly I am extremely bloated. If found sitting up makes me feel better and it is easier to get up and down than when you are laying completely flat.

I will post more tomorrow. This isn't anywhere near as bad for recovery as I expected it to be!!! ;)

It is awesome the bodybugg is a device that strap on on your arm, leg or chest it tells you the calories you burned for the day you input the foods u ate for the day and how much weight you want to lose for the week. mines is 2lbs a week it than tells me how many caloires I have to burn that day to reach my goal. yesterday after work I checked it it said I need to burn 200 more calories to reach my goal at the end of the week so I jump on the exercise bike and burned 250. its worth every dollar pice range is 199-349 from 24hourfitness.com I bought mines for 249.00

I was banded on the 18th and the gasx strips did nothing for me. I had about four boxes on hand just in case but never felt a difference.

One question I do have is calories vs. proper food intake. Is there a Protein requirement or calorie requirement during the clear liquid stage? I am drinking alot of Water and a little Soup but I doubt I am getting 500 calories a day. I am burning 2800 calories a day just laying around the house and average about 3500 steps per day.

My Doctor says a minimum of 30 grams of Protein. Having protein will help your body heal and you will feel better faster.

I drink a bottle of Isopure each day. You can get it at a GNC store or online. It is already pre-mixed so it is easier to drink than a mix, at least in my opinion.

I was banded on the 20th and was told focus on hydration and protein for the first few days. So I am alternating between gatorade and my Protein Drink. I will probably add a little chicken broth tomorrow.

I can't take much more of this gas. I'm breaking out the strips tonight. Ugh, as far as protien goes, I hate the shakes. I don't have any other choice b/c I'm on liquids but I just can't stand any of the ones I have tried. I'll be sooo glad when I get past day 10.

Waiting for the mushies......

Are you on full fluids or only clear fluids. If you are on full fluids and having problems with the Protein Drinks you could try having some drinking yoghurt (if you like yoghurt) or egg flip (again if you like milk and are allowed it). These will both lift your Protein intake and I found them to be much easier to drink than Optifast.< /p>

So glad you are doing well. I feel like crap. Stomach pain, tired, hurts to move, but not as bas as yesterday. Overall I am improving day by day.

I don't know why I can't have a simple recovery. Sure does sound like I am whining. Thanks for listening anyway. I would still do this again.

Day 6 was a big turnaround day for me. I felt lightheaded and not quite right up until that time. The gas pains were very troublesome. Still have the shoulder pain. But, read a good post on here that explained it I think. The poster had talked to her doctor about the shoulder pain she was having. Her doctor told her it was diaphragm referred pain. That the brain is perceiving it as shoulder pain.

What do you think?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
