Just curious if anyone has tried sugar yet...and what happened? I’m almost 3 months out and have not tried anything with sugar. I’m kinda scared of what will happen.

Some of us can tolerate it while others can't. Is your fear sugar because of dumping syndrome or weight gain?

If I have sugar and carbs I crave them more. I don't get sick from it in small amounts. I also feel bogged down when I don't eat healthy.

I’ve had sugar. Ate a popsicle that wasn’t sugar free by accident. It was added to my box by my husband who is working on emptying the freezer and I grabbed it by mistake. I had no issue at all. Nothing. I was shocked.

My diet allows 75 calories of "sweets" per day. I can eat them, or bank them for a special occasion.

Yep...i've eaten sugar.

I like it as much as I ever have...which gives pause for concern. My rules about sugar: I can eat a bite or two of something sugary outside the house. I don't exceed 75 calories per day. (Most days I don't eat these calories....but once in a while it's nice to have them there on a holiday, birthday, party, etc.)

Sugar is a slippery slope for me, so I'm very mindful if I choose to indulge.

I don't eat sugar alone. Only with my support people present. I need extra accountability help with sugar...so this is a self imposed safety net.

The bad news....yes...sleeve people can pig out on sugar, most sugar foods are slider foods, it's a dangerous way to sabotage yourself if you get into the habit. Sleeve people generally don't have dumping syndrome symptoms.

The good news....with extreme Portion Control and accountability you can have treats once in a while. But it might be best to wait until maintenance phase.

You are right on point with this.

I find that I tolerate some sugars better than others. A teaspoon or two of brown sugar on oatmeal - fine. A few drops of liquid agave in a drink? Fine. Alcohol (certain ones) - not an issue if I have one drink ( e.g. 1 glass of wine or 1 cocktail.)

A full sugar soda or dessert gives me the sweats and makes me nauseous. Refined white sugar is terrible on my system.

Just for good measure - I'm about 20 months out and still losing, but working on building muscle - for me its not about the number on the scale, but how I look at this point. (I can't believe become vain.)

Sugar was my downfall. I went 9 months after my sleeve with no Desserts or added sugars, then I had a cupcake. Then I had something sweet now and then. I'm 4.5 years out and almost finished requirements for revisiin to bypass. I will not do that again.

The most regular form of deliberate added sugar I ingest is in coffee, about a teaspoon, and I probably have 5 cups a week. But I've noticed that I have a very noticeable reaction to foods with too much sugar in them, especially combined with carbs; I feel bubbly and gassy extremely quickly, unpleasantly so. So that means I may have one bite of a granola bar or pad thai, then within moments of bite two realize that this is just going to make me feel terrible. It's screened out a lot of foods for me.

I definitely had a sweet tooth but wasn't a huge sugar binger before surgery, with the exception of Ben & Jerry's (which I swear was largely psychological, but whatever). I've found that the Halo Top/Enlightened ice creams do absolutely nothing for me and in fact make me feel bloated and gassy. But I did find Breyer's 100 cal ice cream cups (like the old Hoodsie cups) and that seems to be just the right amount to work as a sweetness fix and stay under my bloating threshold.

I know a lot of people are religious about never touching sugar and that works for them, I'm just trying to stay at the low end of the sugar scale and stick there.

I'm a bypass patient - but yeah, I've had sugar and have no issues other than I crave it a LOT more once I've had some. If I have a large amount of refined white sugar then I will get sleepy and sometimes a very tiny bit nauseous but beyond that I have no symptoms. I generally try and stay away as much as possible just because it's a very slippery slope and can send me off track quickly. I don't keep sugary stuff in the house and if I'm out I always share stuff with my huband or friends so I can just have a bite or two and that's it.

I can tolerate small amounts, but I typically do not crave sugary foods. I drink slightly sweetened tea every day and I tolerate that very well. I have had nausea and sweats when I had something too sugary that didn't agree with me.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
