I am embarking on a new journey with weight loss post vsg. I am 8 months post op and I've lost 71lbs. I still have 43lbs left till goal. I feel as if my vsg surgery has done all it can do for me. Its all on me now and I am realizing how intimidating this all is. I have not implemented a structured exercise routine into my life. Ive become so lazy/weak? And so used to the non-movement part of this weight loss. I am so grateful I've lost 70 pounds with little exercise. I cant help but feel that if I had implemented a structured regiment i would have been closer to goal than now. There are people who started their journey at the same weight/time as me and have reached their goal weight or are like 10-15lbs away. Im not trying to make a pity part for myself. Im trying to make myself WAKE UP AND MOVE! Any advice and encouragement is appreciated. I reeeeally want to get down to my goal weight of 180. I am currently sitting between 225lbs-221lbs. Its been this way for 2 months now... hence me trying to shake things up. Please any ideas to get myself out of this cycle of nonmovement would be great. I need Mental ideas or advice... going to a gym using a home workout i know all of those options. How do i get out of this mindf%^& that keeps me sitting and not moving. I hope someone understands what i am trying to convey and gives some insight. Im all for tough love at this point or anything at all.

I don't think at 8months your tool has stopped working. Unfortunately, I think maybe you've lost faith in your tool and in the process. And I'm sorry for that. It's pretty common for all of us to lose that lovin' feeling when the new wears off and monotony droans on and on. It's part of why I think @jenn1 says maintenance is the hardest part.

You honestly have to be at the point where you are disgusted with how your post surgery outcome is at present. And you have to have the get-up-and-go that you first had when surgery began. I really believe this is a common thing that will hit all of us sooner or later and we do have to stare the beast in the eye and take control of our future. It's time to fish or cut bait. Are you gonna be the boss or the little bi*ch to your addicted fat brain? Only you know the answer!

If it were me (and it will be--so please remind me of this post!) I would do the following:

1. Call the surgeon and make an appointment to discuss what is going on in your head and body. See if he/she can give you a plan for getting back on track. The doc will. They have a vested interest in making sure you statistically are one of their great outcomes. Go ahead and ask for your Vitamin, thyroid, and chemistry panels to be drawn.

2. Go see your RD for a tune-up on diet and a plan for future visits for accountability.

2.5. Ask for a referral to begin seeing a bariatric psychologist or therapist. Start dealing with your depression and food addictions.

3. Join a real life support group in your area--your doc prolly has one.

3.5 Drink 100oz of Water per day and make sure you are taking all your supplements!!!!

4. Go back to basics of surgery: no drinking with meals 30-30; Protein first (3oz per meal); low glycemic veg 2nd; healthy fats; and for now--no fruits or nuts/seeds/carbs etc.; weigh/measure/log EVERYTHING that goes down your piehole; limit portions to 1 cup of food per eating event; limit eating events to 3 meals + 1 small snack per day.

5. Start walking every day. Aim for goal of 1 hour per day. EVERY day. Look at joining a gym to do strengthening exercises.

6. Get out in the sunshine. Make yourself engage with people, your children, your husband. Watch funny shows and movies when you can. Look to laugh as much as possible (it produces endorphins as powerful as anti-depressants).

7. Hang in there. Take it one day at a time. Remember to breathe, be loving yet firm with your addicted self. Come here often and engage with us online!!! We are here to support you!!!

definitely give yourself credit for 71 pounds down.

This is about you and your goals with weight loss surgery. Keep your eyes off of the weight rates and stats of people around you. Focus on what you want out of your surgery.

What will it take for you to wake up and move? This is a big part of the mental game of weight loss.

The weather is beautiful. Go for a walk and make it a goal to take photos of the destination. Make it about the photos and achievement of how far you got on the trail. If you want to talk more about starting at the gym. message me. I have some strategies that help get past the gym intimidation.

How and where do you find motivation to exercise? A few that work for me.

  • Sometimes its not motivation it's perspective. Don't take the strength your body has for granted - A person in a wheelchair would gladly trade places with us for our weight loss struggles. We have the ability to go for a walk in a beautiful area and take photos. (don't let life pass you by sitting around)
  • Anger can be a motivator. Any haters in your life? Anyone who has said you can't do this or you are just going to gain this weight back? Use that hate as your own motivation. I placed my haters photo on the treadmill. Anytime I felt like stepping off early I looked at that photo. I'd stay on the full hour.
  • Gym/ exercise as your counselor/therapist. - Take it to your workout. Get a playlist that speaks to what issues you are working on. You will find your body moving to the pace of the music...lol you will feel better mentally when you get done.
  • Do it even when you don't want to do it...Be pissy and kick your Teddy Bear about exercise! Use your bad attitude/anger to sweat it out...You will sleep better.

Side note and off topic - @FluffyChix Maintaining takes the same discipline as weight loss mode. If you gain it comes off slow..lol

I think both phases are hard work.

Lol I knew you would come through with the tough love. Thank you so much. I need that. Everything you mentioned is true. I have been great with my food and vitamins... thats what i meant when i said the vsg part...meaning the small portions the Protein first and Vitamins etc. Whats missing in my life is the exercise. I think too much when i should just DO. I have this mental block...and i just wish it would go away so i can reach my goal.[emoji24]

Ahhh got it! Yeah, it's soooo tough love on the exercise. I'm not a natural exerciser either. I literally have to bargain with myself to make myself do it. :(

And my greatest fear is getting to where I'm "comfortable" with my body and bored with dieting. It's the thing that has happened to me my entire life, so I know the feeling and recognize it. You know? I'm just praying that this time will be different--I just know that at some point, I KNOW I will be facing what you are facing now. You know?

I'm truly not meaning any disrespect, cuz 71lbs lost is AMAZEBALLS and you deserve all the credit for that!!!

I'm glad your food is good and you're still following the rules. It makes stalling that much harder though, knowing that you're complying with your food and are stuck. :(

Stalls suck!

I love eveything you said. I have so many haters. On my preop diet while i was eating a salad... a family member said why aren't you eating "real" food? I told her I'm on a diet (i am a secret sleever). She goes and says "If you get to be that big theres no way you will lose the weight"... so needless to say i have many people who have eyes on me wishing me to fail... that is a great motivator. I dont think i will ever put that persons ugly face on my elliptical but i sure could use that for workouts as motivation. Thanks sooo much for the advice. It does give me perspective. I am so grateful beyond words can express that I made this life changing decision to save my life.

Try a fitness group. Ive found the best results and most consistency by joining a bootcamp. Ive never loved workouts, but these keep you motivated. Ive been doing one for 6 months, and you keep each other motivated and the exercise changes a lot so you dont get bored. The one i go to is 79 a month.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
