Did you tell the world about your WLS?

Recommended Posts

And by “ the world” I mean everyone whom asked you about your weight loss, co-workers, friends, etc.

I was 90% on board with telling people about my WLS. But now my anxiety is through the roof with opening up about it. When I had my VSG, I told people I was having a female related surgery (I have had them in the past) and then told people that I was following a doctor supervised diet. Because I was visibly eating less & losing weight.

But now I am having a revision (regain/GERD) to RNY & I don’t know what to tell people. The only people who know about my revision are my husband, mother & sister. I just feel like I dont want the embarrassment of regain or disappointment from others for having surgery. But people will clearly see my body & eating habits change. Part of me wants to just say nothing but then again I don’t want to hear people talk behind my back or whisper their assumptions about me. Also, part of me feels incredibly guilty about lying! I didn’t feel guilty about lying about the VSG because I was just scared. I have already been around friends/co-works where weight loss surgery topics pop up and I see their dislike for it (even from my obese friends). Deep down I want to shout to the world that I am having it and feel good about it but another part of me feels so ashamed.

I know this topic must have been brought up a lot but I need input/opinions. Thank you in advance to all.

Everyone outside the fam thinks I had a hiatal hernia repair. :) I'm not the poster child for WLS awareness. So it's my private beeswax and I don't need to tell them about it anymore than my hysterectomy.

Awesome stats! Way to go! I started off just 3lbs heavier then your highest weight. When did you reach your goal?

Did you find that you have a lot of loose skin in your mid section or arms?

Yeah, definitely my mid section and arms. It's not noticeable though. My arms are the worst of the bunch though.

I am only in the very early stages yet, haven't even had an initial consult with the surgeon, but should I go ahead with WLS I won't be telling many people at all, if any.

I would, personally. It has more pros than cons in the long run. It's less of a hassle to tell a lot of people. Some of them have big mouths.

I was the same way at first. However, right before surgery I let everyone at work know. It actually was a relief and the outcome was great. Everyone was supportive and now they know not to offer me food. They are just a great support group. Some of them were interested in the surgery for themselves and their spouses. I forgot to mention that I work with 30 men and am the only women here in my office so it was a little intimidating for me, but I knew I wanted to let them know. Before, they would always offer me doughnuts, Cookies and Breakfast tacos. Now, they now I am truly on a healthy path and do not ask me if I want any. They even are courteous enough to ask if its okay to eat around me, which at first can be hard to see, but eventually you get over this phase.

I effectively told the entire county, and then some. I'm a reporter for the county newspaper, and once I got back to work, I wrote an editorial commentary about having the surgery. (You can read it here if you want: http://enquirerdemocrat.com/taking-big-step-forward)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
