Is There A Place Here for Lapbanders To Sleeves?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I have seen a few threads here and there, but wondering if there is a place for lapbanders to sleevers here to share our stories and progress. It is a bit discouraging to read the posts of surgical newbies who are losing much faster (of course). Would like to know how others who revised are doing since having surgery.

He was able to get both done in one surgery. It takes a little bit longer. I’m sore but doing well!

I am a revision as well. I had surgery 18 days ago. Is it normal to only lose a little over 3 pounds two weeks post op? I only have about 35 pounds left to get to goal but its frustrating me.

SO glad you started this thread! I had a lap band from 2011 to 2015 with two major painful problems which I won’t go into unless you want me to. Long story short, I got it removed in 2015 and ended up gaining all the weight back plus 17 more lbs. I just got sleeved this February. YES, the weight loss is MUCH slower than newbies! I never got that first month 20 or 30 lbs. so many other people have reported. But I’m losing a nice 2 lbs. a week and I’ll take it! It’s a bit frustrating to read about everyone else’s rapid weight loss, but I’ll take 2 lbs a week over nothing or gaining any day.

Just had my revision April 4th 2018

Had Lapband surgery in 2012 lost 75lbs with it and found them again over 6 years. Decided it was time to get it removed as I couldn’t take the stuck sensation Any longer!

Starting weight March 19th was 330 stuck to a liquid diet for Breakfast lunch and a light dinner (chicken/beans) lost 11 lbs before surgery on 4/4/18. Since surgery I am down 6 lbs sticking to my clear Fluid diet and learning how to deal with the new stomach over the last 48hours.

-17lbs into my weight loss journey

I'm a revisionist. My lap band was "installed" in June 2009 (weight - 220), removed via emergency surgery in February 2017 (weight - 148), and I was sleeved this past February (weight at surgery - 160). I'm finding more success with the sleeve. My current weight is 134.

Thanks everyone for coming by and sharing your stories! Glad to hear a few of you have had some success..albeit slower than the newbies. I am 9 days post op now. Started full liquids 2 days ago. I FINALLY am down a few lbs post op, but showed a 6lbs gain after surgery..so today I am now at where I started pre-op. Everyone said it is Water weight from all the IV fluids..I did feel like my feet and legs seemed a little swollen the other day. I started drinking Weightless tea from Traditional Medicinals and that has probably helped. It is an herbal tea for temporary water weight gain. Now would like to see some weight loss BELOW my pre-surgery weight. I gained 50lbs (but at least kept off the additional 80 I lost with the band) after a complete unfill in 2014.I would LOVE to get back to 150 where I was for years before my band issues started in 2014. I figure it will be slower than the first time and given when you have less to lose.

So how do the rest of you recently revised feel without the band? One thing I noticed right away..I can drink before going to bed and not have to worry about it coming back up and choke on it! I don't drink a ton..but before I couldn't even take medicine at night that required me to drink fluids with it..that's a plus..

I have not been terribly hungry..the Clear Liquids stage was hard only because I got tired of just broth, Jello and juice. I didn't have any pre-planning time since this was emergency surgery to get any clear Protein Drinks or anything else..so was limited.

This will be an interesting new journey for sure!

The lapband was a torture device!!! The port the stuck sensations from drinking fluids, prepping a healthy meal only to throw it in the trash cause the first bite got stuck! It was the worse decision I ever made. I am so glad I converted even though this clear liquid stage is HARD mentally. It’s funny because I am drinking my Water now expecting it to get stuck lol I guess that’s why the small sips are easy, and being hungry is easy so I guess we can thank the lapband for that and appreciate the ease of our new stomachs!

I had a lapband in place for 10 years had it removed 3/2017... I had vsg on 8/3/2017. I should have had vsg initially.. it is what it is. I stared at about 233 after lapband removal I’m currently weighing 174. The lowest I’ve been is 168. I was currently laid off from work and for obvious reasons I haven’t been as active or mobile as I was.. All in all, vsg was the best decision I ever made. I became pregnant with our third child with the Lapband. After giving birth it was intolerable to live with I couldn’t get to my green zone fill at all. Actually, I wasn’t even filled I couldn’t tolerate any fills. Surgeon recommended two stage surgery. He wanted stomach to heal after removal of band. Good luck to all my revisionistas and vsg’ers! May the force all be with you...

Lapband placed: 8/2011
Lapband removed: 3/2017
VSG: 8/2/2017

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
