Out-of-pocket? Ohio

Have any of you paid out of pocket for your sleeve? If so, how much, and did you do financing through them? My insurance won’t cover and I need to pay out of pocket. Hoping I can finance and get the surgery and make payments after? Does it work that way?

Just curious why won't your insurance cover it? I ask because many of the reasons insurance denies coverage are also reasons why a surgeon may not take your case (i.e. you lack the medical need for the surgery).

I have private insurance through Molina on the exchange and they don’t cover any weight loss surgeries

I'm sorry to hear that. I believe the average price for self pay is ~$26K and there is generally financing available, but this can vary quite a bit so it's worth asking your local providers what they charge. Alternatively there are a bunch of folks here who go to Mexico for the surgery where it can be done for much less out of pocket (the VSG is a pretty simple proceedure so complications are pretty rare).

You could also see about changing your insurance during your next life changing event/enrollment peroid.

I am planning to have sleeve surgery in Mexico in June. I have a lot of acquaintances who had their surgery there, and are doing very well. The cost is $4700. That includes your surgery, anthesia, motel, and meds. Look online for website called... Www.ALM.com, for info.

Good luck in advance in Mexico, I just know you'll do fine. Use the intervening time to get ready, maybe lose some weight, do exercise, the fitter you are the easier the surgery. I'd love to see Mexico myself someday, so you are my ambassador and tour guide about there.[emoji3]

I had surgery at University of Cincinnati West Chester and UC offered a 12K plan that included everything. Check with them to see if they have any deals. My friend went to Dr. Curry. I actually work for UC and only $3500 was covered. I paid $9800 out of pocket and that was a 50% discount. I should have gone with the 12K deal initially...lol

Dr. Miles in trussville, Alabama charges a little under $12,000 out of pocket. (Right outside of a Birmingham) Only have to go to two appointments prior for self pay (initial consult and pre-op/nutrition class).

Hey also check,out BariatricPalMx.[emoji41]Hospital

Alex Brecher the founder of Bariatric Pal was having a revision to mini bypass this week with Dr illan, if he trusts him with his own life the doctor has to be GOOD! And the prices there have got to be more reasonable than US or Canadian ones.[emoji13]

I had mine in Dallas- total for everything plus a year of post op $10k. Insurance did not cover bc my BMI was 34 and I had no co-morbidity.

No problems- everything went smoothly.

What’s a mini bypass?

I always think of it as a cross between a sleeve and a RnY. There is a single opening into the small intestine instead of the 2 on RnY. Hopefully there will be someone respond from that forum that can explain it better.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
