Emotional eating and food addiction

Recommended Posts

Anyone else that did not suffer from emotional eating or food addiction?

I see a lot of suggestions about changing the relationship to food, not eating out of comfort, getting control of sugar, etc.

But I NEVER had these sorts of issues.

It cannot always be a mental battle that causes obesity ...

It's not always stress/emotional eating or addictions that make you obese. People gain weight when they eat more calories than they burn through activity. This imbalance is the greatest contributor to weight gain.

Other factors:

  • poor nutrition education/misinformation
  • Your location : Lack of access to healthy food choices
  • Genetics/family history
  • medical conditions
  • medications
  • life style and habits
  • lack of activity/mobility issues
  • Aggressive food marketing and availability of poor quality food.

Even if you don't have the food addiction or stress/emotional eating. You still have to make changes to whatever got you to the point of having surgery.

I'm not an emotional eater, nor do I have a food addiction

I know why I'm obese:

  • I make poor food choices, fried chicken vs. grilled chicken, stopping at the drive through vs. going home and eating a Lean Cuisine.
  • Portion sizes are too large (compounded by the unhealthy choices)
  • Bored eating

So I do need to make changes, but I agree, I don't need to "redefine my relationship w food"

I need to

  • Make a conscience decision to eat healthy, and prioritize my long term goals (being a healthy weight) over the short term pleasure
  • This surgery will help with Portion Control
  • If I really want to snack, make sure it is a low cal choice, pickles, carrots etc

Yes, I did, and knew the direct link between feeling negative emotions and eating junk food. That's why it's been such a struggle for me. My therapist said that what they don't tell you about going to rehab is what it's actually like once you take away the tools of addiction. It's...not fun, I assure you.

Sorry of your struggle with this.

The original poster is looking for people that don't have to deal with the Stress/emotional and addictive eating.

Sometimes it's just shitty genetics.

If you don't believe this....look at dog breeds.

There are damned few obese sight hounds in this world. Most Labradors would eat themselves to death if given unlimited food.

Terriers and huskies generally (but not always) can self-regulate a free-feeding arrangement and maintain healthy weight.

Try this with dachshunds, bassets, cockers, or pugs...and they'll be round little foot stools in months.

Any vet will tell you that some dog breeds are much more prone to obesity, and others are almost universally fit.

Sometimes it really is just the luck of the draw.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
