4 Weeks post op - I don’t want to do this anymore [emoji25][emoji25][emoji25]

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

Monday I had another upper GI which did show I had a stricture. I was admitted into the hospital on Wednesday. Thursday they did an endoscopy with balloon to open the stricture. I was released yesterday (Saturday) since my vomiting and heartburn was under control.

So I’m out and I feel SO much better. I actually slept through the night last night and woke up early today.

The doctor did send me home on raglan and lorazepam to help everything move through my stomach.

My only issue now is figuring out what my stomach can handle so that I can meal prep for work this week.

Thank you all for checking in on me and getting me all of the great advice and support !!

Glad to hear you are better [emoji4]

What you are writing about is exactly why I am sitting on the fence. Thank you for sharing

There’s always a chance of a side effect, but you know it’s a pretty sure bet? if you don’t have it done you will most likely suffer much worse complications from obesity.

I had my surgery and for six weeks I was in misery. Absolute misery, I was in pain it was hard for me to move around it’s very difficult for me to eat I was also going through a bit of relationship food change depression. I’m now six months postop and happier than I’ve been in my 43 years. I would never trade how great I feel now, how good I look, how successful I’ve been? I’d never trade that to save myself from six weeks of misery. Just remember to keep things in perspective. Almost all the side effects that you’ve read about people suffering are short term. The weight loss, feeling great about yourself when you follow the protocol, being successful, those are long-term and life-changing side effects.

It’s OK to be scared, It means you’re paying attention. But don’t forget the long-haul and don’t forget the life you’d be trying to change. Don’t let other people’s experiences determine what yours will be. Allow your process and journey to be your own. I wish I’d had this done 20 years ago, not that it was around then.

And I have a daily side effect, I get a pretty bad dumping syndrome ( except mine can happen with Protein, with vegetables, starches, mine is not limited to just sugar). Which means it any point in time I could just suddenly have to go lay down and crash out for a while. I don’t care, I just make sure not to eat those foods and pay attention to what I’m doing and be careful. Because wearing a size 8 Jean, rocking a striped shirt with a tank top underneath and boots with heels and getting hit on four times yesterday, I’ll take that any day Over wearing a size 36 jeans, being admitted to the hospital and in ICU for seven days and hating every square inch of my 375 lb body.

I really hope that you see more positive than negative when searching through here, because in the end I believe there’s way more positive than negative to having the surgery.

I agree, complications are rare and even on my worst days, the good outweighs the bad. I was really mad that I couldn't order my usual meal from Sonic last week, but happy that I fit comfortably in the seat at the theater I was at before that.

I’m back to post another update. My endoscopy only lasted EIGHT days before the stricture returned. This time I knew I would soon be a vomiting lethargic mess. So, I got in to the GI 3 days after it returned and by day 5 I was under for another endoscopy. Well that was on 2/1/18. I had a follow up with my surgeon on 2/5/18 and felt great. I was actually eating more than just Water. Well guess what guys! Today is 2/6/18 and the stricture has returned. That’s right. The balloon stretch only lasted 4 days .

My surgeon and I discussed all of my options yesterday if this were to happen again. We both decided if it lasted only a few weeks (now days) then we would convert from a sleeve to a bypass. If this last procedure had lasted longer we would have done it again, but I can’t keep taking off of work for the procedures and not to mention they are costly.

I’m hesitant to call my doctor and relay the bad news. Partially because I don’t want it to be my reality. But I have to do what’s going to make me better long term.
Wish me luck? Give advice? Idk anymore lol

Thanks for reading

I just thought I’d let everyone know that my surgeon performed a sleeve to bypass revision on 2/13. I have more pain than I did with the sleeve, but feel like a new person.

Thank you for your kind words. They are much appreciated. I am looking into the vitamin patches now.

I have not had surgery YET, but currently take protonix and carafate for GERD and it works great. I have to take carafate 4x’s a day.

My heart goes out to you because this could have been any one of us. My main suggestion is PRAY...ask the Lord to cover you and heal you and give you direction...he can do the impossible just talk to him, cry out to him..he already knows hes just waiting for you to give it to him...BY HIS STRIPES YOU ARE HEALED IN JESUS MIGHTY NAME....#prayerchangesthings

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
