Weight loss stall 3 weeks post- OP

Recommended Posts

My stall just started this morning! We'll see how long it lasts. If my Fitbit Alta is to be believed, my body fat percentage is going down, and I feel like I'm already ready for the next size down in jeans (already down one size since surgery), so there's that.

My stall is over. Lost 2.4 lbs since my last post. My surgeon wants me to stop weighing myself everyday. He only wants me to weigh in at the office. I did a 2 hour walk today. I meet with the nutrionist tomorrow. Persistence is the key. I like how organized some of you guys are. I need to step up my game and start writing things down again.

Even at 16 months post-op, I still track and write everything down that goes in my mouth. Sometimes I don't when I am traveling for work, but if I am home, I absolutely do. And even when I travel, because of doing it for so long, I have no trouble selecting appropriate portion sizes and beautifully maintaining my weight.

It's worth the effort -- especially long term!

Abefroman329 Even if you stall for a week it's okay. Our bodies are doing what it needs to do and at the pace it needs to do it. Something must be going right because your fat percentage is going down.

I’m not sure about the accuracy of the body fat percentage readout on the scale. For starters, I have no idea how it’s calculated.

Anyway, I’ve lost a pound since yesterday, so things may be back to normal.

I was sleeved this past Dec 19th and have been on a stall for almost 3 weeks, there has been absolutely no movement whatsoever, it's like the scale is stuck at that number, but I've checked on others and it's the same.

So I only lost weight the first week, pretty frustrating to say the least.

It's not that Im not grateful for the 17 lbs lost it's just that it reminds me of my struggle this past few years where I was on a strict ketogenic diet, lost 30 lbs the first few months and then stalled for almost 2 years, after that initial drop I couid no longer lose weight, I tried adding more calories, less calories, more fat, less fat, carbs, etc. Nothing worked.

I know I will lose the weight, it's just a bit frustrating that's all.

My surgery was Dec 19th. I was down 32 pounds from surgery diet, but I hit the dreaded three week stall the end of last week. Not only am I in a stall, but I am GAINING weight. This is so frustrating to me! I think it is probably Water weight as I'm sure I was dehydrated before, but it really is discouraging. Did anyone else gain a few pounds in their stall?

The strangest thing happened yesterday, my fingers swelled to the point where my wedding ring wouldn't come off (and it was pretty loose prior to that). I have no idea what, if anything, I ate on Wednesday that would've had a lot of salt.

You should reach out to your doctor the swelling the first week was normal for me. day of surgery I was 199 the following day I weighed 212 lbs due to all the fluids via IV . Which took 2 days to come off. My stall I went up 2 lbs then dropped it. this week I lost 3 lbs. I have been exercising a lot. Walking a lot. On the bike at home one hour a day. I got B12 shot from my primary doctor today, and I have to go weekly now. Speak with your surgeon as soon as you can about the swelling.

I gained 2 lbs and lost it. The feeling was very discouraging. But I was told by the surgeon that it was normal, and he also explained that my hormones could have played a role.

Wow it’s great to hear that I’m not the only one having the same issues. I was sleeved 12/18 and initially lost 12lbs. Then I gained 2lbs and stalled until last week when I saw my nutritionist. I’m in purée phase and she gave me the ok to eat fruits and veggies of course puréed. It seems like when I did the increase in Fiber and calories broke my stall and I lost 5lbs. in 3 days. Now I’m 4 days from a month and have only lost 16lbs. as of today. I feel defeated at times because I lost 50lbs in my 6 month pre-op but hopefully this will change.

I feel the same at times. But we need to understand that our weight fluctuating is normal.

Yes I agree but it’s so hard to comprehend that I’ve had major surgery and this is the initial result. Honestly speaking I have a bit of buyer’s remorse because I’m afraid I’ll be “that person” who only loses 20lbs. from surgery after 16 months. It’s hard and I know it’ll happen but to see people who had surgery after I did and they’re already down 20lbs and I’m struggling to hit 20lbs and I’m following my diet to a T, it’s crazy. Just taking this day by day, doing research and believing in the process.

This was a life saver when I hit the 3 weeks stall. I do not know if Inner Surfer Girl is still on BP but her posting is worth reading. I am so glad she posted it and thought it was time to let the newbies know about it as I have been seeing a lot of posting about 3 week stalls.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
