Most-used kitchen gadgets/utensils after weight loss surgery?

Recommended Posts

I love my stick blender and lots of half cup sized tupperware.

Something to be wary of with the Bullet blenders / juicers, when they blitz the food you are making into smoothies or juices, they split the carbohydrates from the Fiber. What this means is for those who have diabetes or are pre diabetic it is giving you the sugar hit without the fiber connected to the carbohydrate at the molecular level. So be careful when using these kind of blender/juicers.

I also have to say the nutribullet! Easy to make smoothies and clean. Other than that, I also bought sharp new chef knives to cut vegetables and fruit. You will also need tupperware because leftovers and meal prep will become your life.

I didn't cook too much before my surgery and now I'm actually in the kitchen using stuff! It's weird!! :D

What does the air fryer do?

Allows you to cook fried foods with great taste but with under 10% of the oil/fat content of other fryers.

e.g. (1) hot french fries in deep fryer , 150 grams/5 ounces = 450 calories

e.g. (1) hot french fries in air-fryer , 150 grams/5 ounces = 240 calories

It allows you to make wings and fried chicken without the guilt, calories or fat.

Not that we should be having many of the things we used to fry before WLS any way.

Even air-fried foods are less helpful to us than steamed/boiled/raw versions.

Many fried foods are starchy or breaded choices too ... things we should be avoiding.

The quote above about 150g/5oz of hot chips (french fries) dropping from 450 to 240 when air-fried is not great in my book.

A decent sized 180 gram/6oz oven baked potato (if you must have high starch potatoes) is only 170 calories.

Hi Laggy

Can you tell us where this information comes from? I have tried to find any scientific explanation for how a machine could alter carbohydrate molecules this way (I think you are saying it breaks the fibre up, splitting sugar molecules off?)

I wonder if it is an urban myth?

The Bullet is such a great tool for making healthy purée/soft food, I’d hate people to be put off using it without good reason. Thanks 😁

Can you quote the science or research on this?

It seems preposterous.

Despite the fact that the foods are hacked/chopped, as far as I know from years of science and reading about food, the only thing that comes close to what you're saying is: "When given a choice between eating a fruit and juicing it, eat the fruit if you want real satiety. Drinking filtered juice and throwing away the pulp and fibre concentrates the level of fructose/sugar".

If you swallow the whole contents of the smoothie jar, pulp included, you get the fibre AS FAR AS I'VE BEEN READING. One can't kill the general molecular structure just by using a blender.

I'd be happy to see authoritative research if you can point me to it or quote it here.

Otherwise, I worry that it's just a non-scientist passing on an old wives tale/opinion.

All of the above are very good choices. My favorite are the 1/4 cup storage cups I get at the dollar store. Most of my Snacks are measured in 1/4 cup units. These make it easy to measure and carry around. Planning your meals and snacks ahead makes life so much easier.

1) Tribest Blender ... mixes Protein Shakes, smoothies ... pulverises foods ... liquidises ... shreds meats, veggies, etc.

2) Small BENTO box for going out with food to others' places ... best to plan ahead.

3) Flat kitchen scales ... accurate to 1 gram up to 5kg (5000 grams).

4) Bowl kitchen scales ... accurate to 0.2 grams up to 3kg (3000 grams)

Which Bento box are you using? I'm debating offering them in the BariatricPal Store.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
