Am I eating too much?

Recommended Posts

I personally eat 6 to 8 meals a day but smaller in size than normal meals I used to consume. One packed meal usually becomes 2 separate meals because I will split it over the course of 3 to 4 hours. I cant usually eat a whole serving of sides after a 4 oz serving of chicken. But I can eat the 4 oz of chicken about 4 times a day if I wanted to.

Also what might be too much for you might not be enough for my caloric needs, so you really have to gauge your own specific caloric needs per day based on activity level, work outs and lean body mass. Generally speaking an average female should need between 1500 and 1800 calories a day where the average male needs 2000 to 2500. But its only a basic average, I know some women that need 4600 calories a day due to their work outs.

I have never heard eating too little can cause weight GAIN. A stall yes. But if your eating too little how are you able to gain fat ?

I guess you would have to have lived it. Contact any eating disorder clinic and they will tell you the same thing. Something else interesting, during wwii, pregnant women wouldn't have trouble with their babies gaining weight even though they themselves were starving, and gaining weight, because they were rarely getting food.

Also, I don't think that you say terrible things to people on here, you try and help. Some people don't listen, and that is their right, saddens me, but their right. I like the things you say, so keep saying what you're saying!

OP, I don't think that you are eating too much. I eat quite a bit more than you do. I think all of my meals are comparable to your dinner, and I have 3 healthy Snacks daily as well. I stay between 1100-1200 calories now. I don't really want to go lower than that, and want to gradually get up to 1500 per day.

Good luck to you.

I'm six mos post VGS & hernia repair. Learned to eat the tiny bites, chew a lot, eat slowly; however, that doesn't mean I always do this! It's like there's this disconnect switch in me where I'll eat too fast, and then get sick and toss my cookies! Seeing a therapist about my emotional eating has helped me: at least I'm keeping a daily food & exercise journal, and being honest about everything I put in my mouth or the exercise I'm doing. I can eat a scrambled egg, even put a little cheese on it & melt it on top or fold it in. Most food's just too rich for me right now: sometimes I can eat shrimp, sometimes it won't stay with me. Same for chicken, and can't eat meats, pork, etc. Since I'm also a chef, I do make broths & Soups, adding small items to switch it up (like making Tomato & spinach Florentine or making egg drop soup). My fiancée of 17 yrs, gets pissed when I don't want a donut, or candy/chocolate, or any crap fast food. He's expecting twins he's gained so much weight & is a diabetic, along with having Rx's for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. and not supposed to eat crap, but his journey's not mine. He won't even exercise with me even if it's on the recumbent bike & my therapist said, "You're not his mom, you take care of yourself and let him take care of himself." I'll make foods that are healthy, and either he'll eat what I've made, or not. I've taught him to make food he likes, but he really wants me to make them and eat with him, not understanding I can have maybe a tsp, not more. He has his own doctors and my therapist said to go in with him when he sees them, but he only wants me to sit out in the waiting areas. One step at a time is my motto, as well as sharing here and being honest. I can self-sabotage all on my own so I don't need him to get in my way of eating well & healthy, you know? Thank you for listening. Today's one more healthy day on the road to living a healthy lifestyle. Thank God I had this surgery, my life has vastly improved. Thank God for our support forums and all of you. Have a great day.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
