Buddies Group - Surgery Dec 4 to 15, 2017

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I was down as well over reading a post on a Facebook group. A gal posted that she had surgery ONE DAY before me on Dec 4th and she's lost 35 lbs SINCE surgery. What? wow, I have never heard this before. My husband says she's lying as I know some people embellish their results. More believable is 35 since she started. But in only 11 days? I think most of the people who read that post was not believing it. I can believe 30 in the first month. Anyone heard of 30 lbs in 10-11 days?

I wrote a post early this week I am a guy I had my surgery on Dec 4, I had my post op appt on the 15 and I was down 35 pounds today I’m at 49 it is possible my BMI went from a 51 to a 46 at my post op appt. it is possible I consider my self really lucky but I work hard I have been true to my diet and I am in the gym everyday at 5 am. I believe if you work hard you can achieve wish everyone the best of luck.

I am so... pissed, annoyed, name it.

My surgery was set for tomorrow they called me this afternoon to cancel it. i have been for 28 days on that stupid liquid diet and now i need to still be on it for i dont know how long.

it was hard to do all these days, now i am out of their specific freaking Protein unless they tell me i can eat like if i was post-op. I need to talk to them but today no one can answer me for anything.

OMG that’s very unthoughtful of them! They should understand how hard the pre op diet is. I’m so sorry Keira, i’d be furious! Hope it works out soon

Sorry I haven’t been replying or posting much..I’ve been sooooo low on energy and mood wise the last couple of days.. day 5 post op today and so far I’ve tried 1/4 of cream of wheat ( was so excited to have warm food), couldn’t finish it or have anything other than Water for the rest of that day

Next day I tried SF chocolate pudding made with chocolate Protein Shake instead of milk and ate 2 1/4 cups (separate meals) and since that day been having bouts of nausea and weird taste in my mouth that meds weren’t helping

also crazy bad back pain and my energy is barely enough to take me to/ from the bathroom

tried a popsicle this afternoon, was refreshing and it actually made me feel a little better so i had another one and now thinking about number 3

Tell me about it! I'm in real bad ketosis too, I was still constantly nauseous 4 days post op even with meds, so my surgeon said that was what was happening because nausea can be a side effect of deep ketosis. But they allowed me 1 Tbsp of Beans, which I mixed with bone broth and finally the nausea went away! But I still have the nasty taste in my mouth and the ketosis breath is awful!

oh I'm glad I'm not the only one...I have been done with the nausea since a few days post op but this breath is nasty and embarrassing. Going to ask the surgeon Wednesday if that subsides any time soon. :(

Sorry to hear that. I have my first follow up on Dec 20, sleeved on Dec 5. I was doing so great until Tuesday!! Then I over did, had an apt with primary care, then Christmas Program for granddaughter and I collapsed. The one thing my doctor told my hubby in the hospital is not to let me get fatigued because it will cause a vicious cycle. So I'm taking it easy. Had so much energy last Monday, flop on Tuesday!

oh sorry to hear that! I do think we have to be careful not to overdo it! The day I'm seeing the surgeon my boss wants me to meet them at the team holiday lunch which i have no issue sitting there drinking through and then back to the office..I'm probably going to be super tired but I'm trying to build up stamina each day. Hope you're feeling a bit better now!

Thanks SK, seems like today I have a little more energy. But I have to be careful cause it catches up with me later in the day. We are huge on Christmas and that's why I think I'm so frustrated. Used to put 150K lights on our house, we were on TLC's Invasion of the Christmas Lights but haven't done the lights for 4 Christmas' but we are still doing the toy and food drive we've done for 14 yrs. It's smaller this year so that part is good for me cause it's a huge job. You're right, I have to think about myself. Even going through this I decided it is for me, not hoping my husband would lose, which he needs to desperately. I've been burned out working on the side even though I've been on disability for years. My hubby was on disability in 2016 and it was so stressful to see him in pain, plus I had to do everything, the bills, the house and earn some income. It took a toll on me even up to this year. I had my lap band out in Jan 2017 and have wanted this surgery then but they said I needed to wait and let sores on my stomach from the lap band to heal. Then Nov 7 was my date and our car show fundraiser was rained out and rescheduled for the 11th which blew out my surgery date. So Dec 5 was the time and I have no regrets. Probably good your surgery is after Christmas. My doctor only had me on a liquid diet for 2 days before surgery and I ate all my "last favorite foods" the two weeks before that but smaller portions. I still lost 5 lbs somehow, lol. How long do you have to do a liquid diet before surgery? I hope it's 2 days like me, it will help for Christmas Day. Thanks for writing. I really appreciate it. I'll keep posting how I'm doing. My post op is Wednesday to get the staples out, I'm so ready, they hurt!!

hi Mary - I just responded to another post of yours before seeing these more recent ones. Sorry you are struggling :( You sound like you may be a bit like me in taking on too much for everyone and then burning out a bit ...please remember to give yourself a break..you are less than two weeks out of surgery where they removed much of a major organ. We deserve to have some highs and lows, both in energy and the scale. I get bummed when i step on the scale and there's no movement for a second but I am reminding myself there is a process and the body will re-settle as so many people have said. Friends who have had this done said they didn't lose for a whole week several times during the first year, yet still took off all their weight (over 100lbs) and that the body needs to adjust. I keep trying to keep my mental dialogue positive and that works for me. Hang in there sweetie...just follow your surgeon's plan and your weight will come off too :)

My surgery date was 11th. Today was my 1 week weigh in. Can't help but be disappointed as I've only lost 2.7kg (about 6lbs). From reading so much about other ppl, I really expected more.

try not to get down - the scale can completely change next week! it's still over a bag of potatoes which is a good start!

omg - I would be beyond pissed. I wonder what could make them postpone - the surgeon is sick...or had a death in the family or something? and not to have another date. I'm so so sorry. keep us posted!

Hang in there! I had my surgery the same day as you and have had terrible nausea. BUT I am feeling a bit better every day and walking 10 minutes at a time feels like I just finished a marathon. I couldn't do Protein Shakes till yesterday but they really give you a little energy boost.

Hello I was sleeved 12/15/17 and it’s been a little difficult to drink all my liquids. I’m drinking Isopure liquid drinks but they are disgusting in my opinion so what I did was I added crystal light in it and it’s a little bit more tolerable. Can’t wait till day 4 so I can start drinking my Premier Protein shakes!

I get that feeling sometimes. I'm pretty sure my problem is stomach cramps. I take my med for cramps (Levsin) and it gets better. Maybe you're experiencing something similar.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
