Sushi post sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I have a good friend, and we try to get together once every month or 2 for sushi. I like the California roll, and a few others. I am 3 & 1/2 weeks post op, so i know this is not happening any time soon. But, has anyone here tolerated/enjoyed sushi a couple months post op? Is rice ok for the sleeve ? (just rarely, not often)

Is rice allowed on your plan?

I have been wanting sushi rolls recently myself. I have a few issues with even attempting it. 1. Biting the roll is just impossible, but putting the whole piece in my mouth is also impossible depending on the size. 2. It's also used to really chew sushi thoroughly. 3. I'm staying away from rice, Pasta, bread, etc. I need to get higher levels of Protein in and all that rice will just take up space.
My advice is to start a new tradition. Try a new restaurant with foods more suitable to your new lifestyle. Perhaps try taking an art class together, exercise class, go shopping, movies, or a play. Change your visits to not be food oriented. It's so hard because that's what most people associate with good times and happy times.

Rice is carbs. Rice also expands in my stomach. I dont tolerate it well.

I make a healthy version of a california roll.

Crab filling

Crab meat. shreded carrot, cucumber seeded and chopped. Olive oil mayo with a bit of rice wine vinager.

Cut an avocado in half. Fill the inside with the crab filling.

Top with urichin roe

Order sashimi which is just the fish part. I eat it all the time, great high Protein meal!

I would think that sushi would be just fine. You will likely only have 1 piece..... then wait a while for the second. That may be all that You want.

Like everything else, you may have to compromise by cutting or biting it in half so that you can chew it properly. Maybe even lose some of the rice; but I can't see that being a food that you will have to say goodbye to forever. I certainly don't plan to.

How many months post-op until we are ok to have slices of sashimi or poke? I usually go to the Japanese grocer and get sashimi grade (previously deep frozen to kill parasites) salmon and ahi and slice it up with a little soy and ginger. I thought raw fish was off limits for several months? All this sushi talk has me craving it!!

You are allowed to have it when your plan says your allowed. I am sure you are aware that all plans can be different so no one can tell you when to have it. My plan on the other hand didn't say anything about raw fish so I had it when I was on normal food I tried some..

I love sushi and still do. However, I’ve changed what I order. Rice doesn’t work for me sleeve and really isn’t great for our diet anyway. So I enjoy sashimi and my favorite now is tuna poke, basically just raw tuna, tiny amount of spicy mayo, scallions. Yum!!!!! Most sushi chefs will also make you your favorite roll without the rice.

If you order wisely, sushi can be your diet and Protein intakes best friend. I enjoy it weekly!!!!

I would wait about 6 to 9 months to mess around with rice. Its not terrible for you, but there are better choices to fuel your body with. But yeah, I can eat sushi now if I want..Not as much for sure, but I can.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
