How long were you out

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

First let me say this forum is the absolute best. It's really the extra support that I need.

I am 8 days post op and starting to feel like myself again. The discomfort from gas is still there but nothing like a week ago. I'm learning how to get my 64 ounces of Protein in and becoming quite creative with my meals (I mix crystal light in my plain Greek yogurt, yum). Can't wait to begin soft solids because then all my protein will come from food.

My doctor completed my disability paperwork for up to 6 weeks. I was shocked, especially because I hear of people going back to work after a week. How long have others stayed out? I was thinking 3 weeks but don't want to stall my weight loss by sitting in the house.

Best of luck to everyone.

I am 12 days post op right now and I will be staying out another two weeks. My job can involve some lifting and such at times so I want to make sure I give myself enough time before returning to work.

I returned to work after one week and didnt have any problems. If I needed to lift something heavy I asked co-workers for help...but luckily my job is primarily office work. I did have to crawl around under a desk to set up a new computer...and I didnt have any issues.

So you'll be out about a month? I'm thinking four weeks should be good for me too

Wow you went right back to work. I'm a week out but I still have lots of pain so I'm glad I'm not back yet. Best of luck to you

I’m 10 days out and will be returning tomorrow to work. I feel like this is the right time. The last couple days have been so great and I’m feeling more and more like myself so I’m excited about going back

Yes I will be out almost exactly a month. I can go from lifting >100lbs to pushing around 1500-2000lbs on a pallet jack so I wasn’t taking any chances on going back to work to early.

My surgery is going to be scheduled near Christmas so I'm combining some vacation with my sick leave. I am worried about nausea more than the incision pain. I've had 2 surgeries with similar cuts and went to work the next day with little to no pain and my surgeon said if I was ok with those, I'll just need to handle the nausea since the outer pain/soreness will be similar. I'm lucky because I can telecommute if needed rather than going into the office.

That's great. I'm just starting to feel like myself, so I'll probably do at least 3 weeks. Enjoy your first day back

I'm still experiencing soreness, I feel like if I move too much or sneeze too hard, my stomach is going to pop, lol. I have the option to work remote as well but I manage a team and feel more valuable in the office.

Best of luck to you

I'm a physical education teacher and
I'm scheduled to have my surgery December 18th. We have 2 weeks off so I'm hoping to take advantage of my Christmas break and be ready to return in 2 weeks. That way I won't have to use any leave. We'll see. I'm super hopeful. I'm a faily quick healer so I hope it all works in my favor.

2 weeks completely out and off, followed by 2 weeks working from home :) I’m lucky with my team and my boss, who are extremely supportive

I'm combining my remaining vacation days/holiday for a total of 11 days off. I work a desk job, so I'm hoping this will be sufficient.

I had mine on a Thursday and was back to the office on Monday. Use to having several reconstructive surgeries so this surgery was minor to me. One thing I learned from all my surgeries is the importance of walking asap. Within an hour of being brought up from recovery I was walking around the nurses station and down the hall and doing that quite often. That's a huge help in keeping the gas from building up. Greatly reduces bloating and pain.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
