Surgery, Coverage and BMI concerns

Recommended Posts

My BMI is 40.1, my NUT said I can't lose any weight before surgery (which has not been scheduled yet). I have gone through all but 3 out of the 17 requirements from my doctor. (EDG, sleep study and a cardiology clearance are left) How do I maintain my current weight with the 2 week pre-op diet coming up? I have BCBS CareFirst of MD.. they require a BMI over 40 unless I have a pre-existing condition.Insert other media

my bmi was 40 too my nut told me I couldn't lose any weight either, for 6 months I had to maintain my weight ... i got approved in august ... Tomorrow is my last day of my all liquid pre-op diet and when i weighed myself on Monday i was 7lbs down .. i asked my coordinator at my surgeons office if i lost weight on my pre-op diet would that be a problem and she said no because i was already approved ... My surgery is in 2 days and the hospital called me yesterday to register me....

Thank you very much for responding, that makes sense now. I have not been approved yet. My doctor wanted to wait to see if I had any co-morbidity conditions like sleep apnea, etc. I still have a month to go before I have my sleep study then he will go for the approval.

I think you need to maintain through insurance approval but once that happens, losing weight shouldn't risk surgery. In fact, I think I recall it being indicated that losing weight actually shrinks the liver, making the surgery easier for the surgeon.

From what I was told by the few surgeons I have spoke to is that they will submit from your BMI at your first doctors visit. My insurance requires six months so they said even if my BMI was to go below 40 I would still qualify

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
