Nausea after surgery?

Recommended Posts

My surgery isn't until the 24th of this month however the more I read the more I am seeing that most people experience extreme nausea after surgery. How long does this usually last if its true and is there anything they can give you? I have heard this is the worst part of the surgery is the nausea?

Its the worst because if you can't hold nothing down you can easily get dehydrated with this type of surgery. Usually its from the anesthesia or your pain meds that can bring on nausea or vomiting well at least my experience and it last about three to four day for me ...I did have to go back to the hospital for a couple hours for IV because I was slightly dehydrated from not keeping nothing down....They have medicine for nausea but keep in mind it won't work if its your pain medicine thats making you nauseated again at least this was my experience.

Mine only lasted 2 days post op. I had my surgeon give me a script for zofran. It works great! Melt one on your tongue, and nausea is gone in minutes.

If you are susceptible to nausea they can give you a scopolamine patch that you wear behind your ear... you put it on before surgery and keep it on for 48 hours. Works very well! Also zofran/onadansetron works well. And finally enmend is a very pricey but AMAZING antinausea prescription. Talk to your doctor about options. I almost always get nausea with any surgery or narcotics but each of those have worked well for me at different times.

I've always gotten horribly sick after anesthesia. They gave me the patch this time and I had no issues. What a world of difference! Just voice your concerns with the preop team and they should take excellent care of you.

I took Emend the night before surgery, got a patch the morning of surgery and am taking zofran for 8 days post-op. Even with all that the second and third days were horrible. I would even get woken up from sleep with nausea. The fourth day was tons better and it' been better each day. It wasn't my main focus since the fourth day.

I'm 3-weeks post surgery and I'm still nausea. I have the patch, zofran and now they gave me Ondansetron. I can barely drink an 8oz shake in 1oz intervals every 15 mins, without vomiting. I'm getting frustrated and regretting the decision I've made.

Any suggestions here would be appreciated. Will I ever be normal to sit down and eat with my family? Will this pouch ever stretch? Please help.

Try warm ginger tea before the shakes. I too get nauseous from surgery pain meds from two non-wls surgeries. (My wls is in 12 days, crossing fingers they give me a patch)

jcb123: Have you ever had general anesthesia before? If so, were you nauseous post-surgery? If not, then you might not experience this issue post-WLS. Fingers crossed!

Day 2 post op. Nausea is better. Day of surgery was horrible. I dry heaved with All meds included zophrin! Regaltor and Pepcid. Yesterday I came home and it wasn’t as bad. Getting used to gas pain and how to sip properly.

Zofran and ondansetron are the same medication, zofran is the name brand the other the generic. See if they can give you Phenegran if comes as a suppository if you can't keep down a pill. Or see if they will prescribe Enmend. One pill can be over $200 but might be worth it. Lasts for 48 hours.

Just an FYI, not everyone has nausea after the surgery. You might get lucky like me. I have had 0 nausea so far (2 weeks and 3 days post-op).

I do have a hard time getting my fluids in, and more than a couple oz of blended chicken/tuna salad.

MarinaGirl,

Yes, I have had general anesthesia many many times and I never have gotten nauseous however from the sounds of it I wasn't sure if this particular surgery was the cause of the nausea or if it was just how some people react to anesthesia?

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
