Slight weight gain prior to surgery...pre op appt this Friday

Recommended Posts

I've gained 5 lbs. since I saw the NUT in August and my pre-op appt is this Friday. Do you think they'll cancel my surgery??? Any suggestions on how to lose these 5 lbs. by Friday? TIA

Whether they cancel your surgery or not depends on your specific situation. I would need to know more info. Did you start at 282, lose 6 pounds, and gain back 5, which would put you at 281? Did you start at 282 a few months ago, lose nothing up to August, and then gain 5 pounds to put you at 287? Either way, it depends on your surgeon's (and insurance) requirements. You need to ask your surgeon.

It may be impossible for you to lose 5 pounds by Friday, but a super strict low carb diet will probably get you close. Less than 20g of carbs, and lean Protein and veggies ONLY. I have dropped 7-8 pounds in 3 days that way.

Again, I don't know your specific situation, but I would probably strictly adhere to whatever guidelines your surgeon/insurance has laid out for you. They will know that you are not if the scale continues to go in the wrong direction.

Good luck to you.

The answer to your question really depends on the guidelines implemented by your insurance company and/or bariatric surgeon.

I'm embarrassed to admit I gained 25 pounds between the time of my consultation appointment (Oct '14) and the week prior to surgery (Apr '15).

I engaged in daily food funerals where I ate multiple servings of my favorite foods 'one last time' before saying goodbye. I couldn't control my appetite.

Luckily, my surgeon and insurance company made no comment about the massive weight gain. I underwent surgery 2.5 years ago and maintain my new, lower weight without many issues.

If you're preop appointment is during the weeks you're instructed to be on a preop diet, it might be an issue. The preop diet is design to reduce abdominal fat and shrink your liver to prep for surgery. I'm not sure what your preop diet is, but mine was sugar free Jello, Popsicles, broth, and Protein Shakes. To gain 5 lbs on that is unimaginable. Every surgeon is different, but I have heard of cases when surgery is started and the liver is too fatty so the patient is closed up and surgery doesn't continue.

I'm actually 280 now (I have to update my stats). Long story short, my surgery date came sooner than expected. I thought it'd be late October and I'd have more time to get the 10lbs off.

8/2017--saw NUT and was 275, got up to 285, lost 5 and need the other 5 to come off.

ChereS,

I showed up at my pre-op appt 5 lbs heavier than when I had seen my surgeon 2 months prior. He said to make sure I followed my pre-op surgery diet so my liver would shrink before my surgery (which was 6 days after). Like others have stated, just do the Clear Liquids. It's only before and after the surgery. For me, that's 6 weeks (which is over in 9 days!!!) but it is well worth it considering the trade-off. Hang in there. I was just as nervous about the weight gain as you are now but it really does depend on the surgeon. 5lbs shouldn't be a no-go but don't gain any more. Just think about how good you are gonna look when you start losing that weight! Let us know how it goes. Good luck and happy shrinking!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
