Day 3 on this pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

I dont know if anyone has experienced what I have been experiencing restless nights?? For the past few days since I started the liver shrinking diet, I have been having the hardest time falling asleep!

My headaches are bad as well OMG! I keep reminding myself that I can do this!

Surgery date: OCT. 3

Carb withdrawal. ((hugs)) Drink lots of Water. Maybe take a calcium/magnesium supplement before sleep and that might help you relax. At least that's what I do...

Oh my! my headaches disappeared by morning of day 4. I hope you are feeling better. I take 5 mg of melatonin about 30 minutes before bed. But you have to be laid down in the 30 minutes, or it kind of wears off, IMHO.

I have 8 days to go

restless nights?

For my first two nights, I had a couple of unexpected middle-of-the-night trips to the toilet to urinate. And I probably took longer to get back to sleep.

That was probably major extra Water loss in losing a few pounds quickly and processing three Protein Shakes and extra drinking water. It might have also been the adjustment to the higher-protein/lower-carbohydrate regimen.

I'm now at day 14 and the 10 of the 11 nights since the first two have been superb. 7:35 to 9:15 sleep according to my Vivofit and 45% to 55% of that in the deep sleep zone. The only night that was different was after my day at the day surgery centre where I slept or was under anaesthetic for nearly five hours between 11am and 7pm.

You may improve after another night or two. Do you wear a fitness band that measures your sleep and movement?

My headaches stopped about day 5, I'm on day 16 of the pre op diet, it's intense. I'm not sure if you all are on the same diet I'm on.

I'm not allowed to have protein/meal replacement shakes until post surgery during the liquid diet.

The biggest thing that I've had to get used to is meal prepping. I meal prep like 4 chicken breast that I cut into strips every Sunday and portion them out for the 9oz of Protein I'm allowed a day, it's obnoxious but I've already lost the 5% of my body weight so I would say it's working.

You too will get passed the headaches!

I'm just short of a year out and remembering very well about how the pre-op diet felt. It was hard! The headaches (and super crankiness!) were from a withdrawal of all the crap I had been used to "medicating" myself with. (Carbs, sugar, caffeine).

The happy news is that 1) it gets a tad easier after a week and 2) you can think of it as your body "cleaning house". Getting rid of the bad stuff and prepping you for a lifetime of health.

Hang in there, you'll be at your surgery date before you know it! :)

PS: edited to add: I also had DREAMS about food! I clearly recall a dream where I was hiding with a huge burger in hand, trying to hide it from my hubby. lol!!

I don't get to have any foods, just liquids for 14 days for pre op. It is very hard.

OH you guys mean the pre op diet directly before the surgery, I think we have to fast the day before, but other than that yeah we're on what my best friend calls a starvation diet. lol

Omg you poor thing that is intense! I am allowed to eat sugar free foods like Jello, pudding, etc and of course the broths, Protein Shakes which i drink twice a day, decaff coffee with skim milk, 1 cup serving of non starchy veggies like, broccoli, carrots, etc. for 7-14 days.. my biggest thing too was the meal prep! I always relied on fast foods or anything made, easy fix, but now thats all I do lol.
So far the headaches have gotten better! Wishing you the best!

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
