CALM is kind of fizzy so be careful. But it does work!

Just a reminder.. don't ever consume anything fizzy until at least 8 weeks post op (preferably never.. let it sit until all bubbles are GONE). Patients have died from, not even thinking, taking alka-seltzer during the first few weeks post op. The gas bubbles can expand in the stomach and rupture it (since there isn't anything but staples holding it closed until some scar tissue can form around 6-8 weeks postop).

I had the same problem after my surgery and for about 1.5 months after. Check with your doctor to see if been Fiber is ok to take (my guess is yes as that's what mine recommended) it worked great for me. It has no flavor, dissolves completely. I add two teaspoons to each 8oz of Water and have not had any issues since. Do not strain though

Miralax was a no for me, which is weird because people sing it's praises. I took it in my AM coffee for almost a month, thinking the extreme stomach expansion and weight gain it caused would get better - but it never did. I gained 6 lbs of Water and looked pregnant while I was on it - it was insane. My pants didn't fit, haha. I think most people's systems respond fine to it, but mine did not - came back off of it and bam, everything was normal again.

I drink a TON of water every day (120 oz), and still need bathroom help - so I put fiber in my coffee, these days. It helps really well, as long as I get my water in, as well!

3 weeks out.... I didn't go for 10 days. I took and still do 4 senekot a day. The first couple times I finally went were not normal at all. I thought I had internal bleeding. Doc said it's normal. If you want take fleet enema. It's normal just keep trying to get fluids in although it seems impossible you will get there I promise.

every day is a new day!

My doctor recommends one stool softener a day, and two teaspoons of benefiber. I put the benefiber in my Protein Shake, but you can put it in any liquid you want. I make sure to drink my 64 ounces of Water daily. It is so important to get in your water. I have had no problems with Constipation with this regimen. I hope to you great success in your weight loss.

When I had a similar problem, my surgeon recommended Miralax, a stool softener and hitting my daily Water goal every 24 hours. He told me to take my nausea meds if needed but to get my water in. I carried it with me everywhere and took a sip every 10 seconds. It took about 48 hours but it worked.

You must be in a lot of pain at this point. If you don't soften it up you will be pooping a bowling ball at least it will feel like it. When I get in this situation only one thing helps. I mix magnesium citrate with sprite or squirt it's nasty but it starts working in 15 minutes to a couple hours. After surgery you can't have soda so maybe dilute with Water unless you can stomach it then chase it. The quicker you drink it the faster it will work. Since you have never used it you may only need a few sips. IMG_1173.JPG

Hello! First of all sorry your having BM problems! Im going on 4 wks post op & i too have not taken my metform since the day b4 my surgery! Like many others I use Milk of Magnesium & Dulcolax Pink. For me the Dulcolax is a bit harse. But you know what has help me for years to a BM was simply drinking my 16oz of Folger Decaf coffee with international Creamer every morning!
Im also one of a few who has no problem drinking my Water except it has to be flavored because for some reason plain bottled water hurts my stomach. With it flavored I can drink up too 48 oz a day when I time it right.
For the coffee have you heard of Rocket Fuel or Bullet Coffee? Its basically hot decaf coffee with Protein Powder mixed in it along with other ingredients. You can find the recipe on Pinterest.
As to the straining, as mention earlier is not a good idea cause you dont want to pop a staple or cause a leakage!
My Dr told me that once I started to eat (I took it to also mean soft pureed food too) is when I can add Benefiber & start taking my Probiotics again. I use the Healthy Shape Benefiber. I mixed in my food & Protein powdered shakes.< br>

Becareful cause this stuff, even though it works, can raise you Blood Pressure due to its high salt content! Well thats what it dic to me anyway! I know not all are the same but its good go be cautious especially if you've had BP problems or heart problems in the pass!

I'm two weeks out I have just been drinking Protein Shake n Gatorade/ Protein Water. But since I can't get enough liquids I'm dehydrated... this has led me to be constipated or idk if it's lack of Fiber or cuz I stopped my metformin but it's been a week & I want to know if I can strain ??? I've started chewable fiber & took two stool softeners today ! Still it seems STUCK just like my life. I feel like once I'm relieved I'm only gonna drink fiber over protein

Are you exercising? I exercise daily. Usually 2.5 miles in the morning and 2.5 miles in the afternoon. A brisk walk both times. And try to get your water in. That's very important.

2 weeks post surgery how much do I exercise ? I walk 800-1000 steps after each meal so maybe three times a day ...
what finally helped was consuming ibuprofen for two days brought down the inflammation & I had to use ice to freeze the pain locally n then push! Three stool softeners + banana shake + benefiber + chewable fiber !!! I'm so glad but I guess it's an ongoing problem till I'm back on normal diet & working out as much as I can :-(
I love u guys thanks for the support... the first thing I do now when I wake up is have fiber.. I don't want that pain again.. ever !

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
