9 Months out With Severe Constipation

Recommended Posts

You can keep the cost of miralax down by buying the generic which has the same ingredients but is less expensive. I also used miralax (generic) but I found it causes too much gas for me but it dos work.

I add Fiberone Cereal in my Greek yogurt every morning. I also have a cup of Smooth Move tea which works for me and tastes good. I buy it in bulk from Amazon. If you want to try it first you might be able to find it at your grocery store, mine has it. If one cup doesn't work have a second cup in the evening.

Good luck, I have had chronic Constipation all my life which did not change after the surgery...

Just so you know.. Smooth Move tea can be found in some grocery stores.

The tea works as a stimulant (same class as ex-lax and coffee). Stimulants can cause the bowel to become "lazy", requiring their use (i.e. "if I don't have my coffee, I get backed up").

If you try the tea, definitely start with 1 cup. I had 2 the first time, and oh man... did I sit there by the bathroom for 2 hours with the most horrible cramps!

I don't have CHRONIC Constipation but i did notice the less carbs i eat or calories the less i go number 2. If I'm eating lower carb its harder for me to have a movement. Not gonna lie, when i go off the rails for a few days things start moving again. But i don't want to sacrifice my diet just so i can poo. Also i wasn't sure if i was the only one only able to get down 1.5 oz of dense Protein. I thought it was strange at this point (11 months post op on sep.5) that i can't fit in but a little more than 1.5oz of dense protein in one meal. I guess that's why i turn to carbs because its easier to get down and tolerate. I wasn't sure how normal that was. Now i think i need to talk to my surgeon. Thank you for voicing your experiences and concerns. It makes me feel much better knowing im not alone.

Oh wow, can I identify! That's been singularly my biggest challenge. Here's the regimen I follow, but lots and lots of Water is critical. AM: 1 Magnesium pill,2 stool softeners. PM: another Magnesium pill. Miralax as needed. Took Amitiza for a few months but couldn't afford the $200 a month price tag. Water, water, water. Finally "on track".

Also - fiber can make you more constipated since it binds your stool. Learned this the "hard" way.

Had a terrible time with Constipation, I finally have found the solution that has been working for me the last 2 months. I do miralax in my coffee every morning, and eat a small piece of my "life changing loaf of bread" every other day. In the beginning I ate it everyday, but now I don't need to. With all that good flax seed, etc and the psyllium seed husks, it keeps things moving. I make a loaf , cut it up in small slices and put the whole thing in the freezer to last longer. I love it, 1/2 slice toasted, yum.

Good to hear you can safely take miralax more than once a day. Even before surgery I've had chronic Constipation. I never really discussed it with doctors because I was to embarrassed. I would go once a week, if that and be very uncomfortable. I had been taking miralax daily and was better but I had stopped. For the past week I've been taking it daily again and things have been much better.

Have you added any stool softener to your diet? Colace 100mg capsules 3 times a day with breakfast lunch and dinner? Along with increasing your diet intake? Have you tried to include Green salads?

Colace is the name of the medication not copacetic

Hello friends,
I would like to get some feedback from those of you who are several months out that are dealing with chronic Constipation. Not the occasional episode of constipation, but severe cases. I have had chronic constipation since my sleeve surgery on November 14, 2016. Prior to surgery, my bowels were normal.
I have tried prunes, prune juice, beefing up fiber intake, etc. For the past 4 Months I have tried two different prescriptions, Amitiza and Linzess. I have also had a colonoscopy and spent plenty of time with my gastro doctor. I would say that I have made at least 5 or 6 trips to the emergency room because of severe abdominal pain within the last 7 months. Each time resulting in x rays and/or scans that revealed severe constipation as the source of my pain.
Currently, daily Miralax and Linzess are not helping me have a bowel movement. I feel like I am throwing away more than 60 bucks a month for no relief. The only thing that empties my bowels is a bottle of magnesium citrate, and I don't feel that it is safe to drink every week.
My gastro doctor says just keep doing the Linzess and Miralax twice a day. Lots of constant pain and endless constipation.
Can anyone else identify with me? Has severe ongoing constipation been a problem for anyone else? If so, what has helped you?
Thanks for sharing.

I had constipation issues prior to my VSG, I drink a Laci La Bean dieters tea it works wonders I order from Amazon but it's also in stores just a lil pricey[emoji41] I use organic honey to sweeten the taste. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001HCHGR0/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_Gm-SzbYDHJ9N7

Hi mylighthouse, I find that a teaspoon of magnesium in Water every evening half an hour before I go to sleep does wonders. You have to stir out and let the liquid become totally clear before drinking, since this ensures that the active ingredients are working. I've been totally regular since I started doing this. It also helps me fall asleep. In fact many people are

You can get magnesium powder, or find the magnesium fuzzy tablets.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
