Excision means to be cut off

Subcutaneous tissue means stuff that's under the skin

Lipectomy means cutting out the fatty layer that is attached to the skin

Infraumbilical means below the belly button.

So basically they cut skin and fat, leaving the muscle underneath untouched. I assume your bellybutton won't be touched either.

My MIL had this done. She had a HUGE flap that was removed.. 30lbs! They did remove her bellybutton, but either way the scar will be similar. It'll be horizontal (probably will curve up some), right above the pubic hair. Hip to hip.

The recovery is about 6 weeks, typically.

Would anyone who's had this procedure share pictures I'm really concerned about the fat above the belly button that won't be touch. unfortunately I can't afford to do a Tummy Tuck ... I had my weight loss surgery in 2013 and have lost 80 lbs and exercise about 3 times a week and can't get rid of the stomach fat

If your insurance is covering the panniculectomy, I know that some surgeons will let you self pay the difference in cost to have a full tummy tuck. The panniculectomy won't do anything to improve the area above the belly button, it's just removing the skin below. Good luck!

I had my Panni done 2 years ago. I don't have pictures but I can tell you I am not happy with it at all. Well, I am glad my fat and skin gone. They removed 10plus #'s. He didn't do what he had told me he would and immediately I ask him about my upper stomach, he told me it would go down that it was just swelling. I kept asking him over and over again but to do more it won't be with him!!!t he never gave me an anwser until my next to last app. I canceled my last one. He did finally say that I was blessed with not only my lower stomach but I also have mu upper stomach and said I was just blessed!! I call it a bunch of BS.Then he went on to say I would need Lipo and he would give me a good deal. He would do a breast lift (we had talked about it) and the LIPO for $6,000, I feel like he didn't do what he was supposed to and he was drumming up business for himself. We had talked about dog ears I didn't want them!! Well, I have them on both sides!! If I would have known that I could have paid the extra I sure would have done it. My suggestion is this "DON'T just do the Panni. I don't know how you are built but now I have my upper stomach that needs more tender loving care and when and if I ever make up my mind

Great topic for me to observe, since I may be at the point of a "clean up on aisle 5" with the belly bag and such. I am starting to research this subject, and I do agree that the full Tummy Tuck is the way to go for me, with some Lipo on the new man-boobs as well (might as well look good AND feel good).

Thanks to all of you for the honest info and feedback.

So sorry TerryJones that I can not contribute any info to you. Good luck with the surgery

However I also have to have work done. If I am understanding correctly the panniculectomy only is for below the belly button. The area above the belly button is considered to be a Tummy Tuck? Are these usually done at the same time and how much longer would recovery be if both are done.? I believe we will be discussing my need to have both done in 2018. This Fall the Dr wants to work on my arms. Thanks for any replies.

Do the doctor make more money if you pay for the surgery out of pocket I'm just curious because at my appointment I asked it they could try and get approval for the Tummy Tuck and was told that it would be denied because it considered cosmetic so I called my insurance and they said I do have coverage and gave me additional codes so I gave that information to the doctor office and they said insurance would not cover me so I'm just a little confused to be honest my upper stomach as more fat [emoji23]

They really don't make more money. I feel like this is why our insurance charge so much!! I have heard that most insureance will not cover a TT. If you have an issue with skin after weight loss, they would be more apt to cover it. I documented all of my issues with my PCP, Dermatologist and my Surgeon. Also, copies of my medication that was prescribed to me. My Surgeon's office submitted all of the forms and it was approved. When you submit your records have the insurance pepole submit because they know exactly what the want to get things approved. Good Luck

I'm in Seattle with Regence. They required documentation of abscess that required drainage in order to cover anything, so I was self pay. I had a 360 lower body lift with a fleur de lis Tummy Tuck, because I had a lot of excess skin above & below the belly button, and I'm super happy with my results.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
