Auto Immune after WLS

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been diagnosed with an auto immune after wls? I am just over 5 years out and currently going thru the process of an auto immune diagnosis. Right now we have only gotten the red flags from my blood work and I am being sent back for more testing. Prior to surgery I never had immune issues, rarely got sick, aside from being overweight (hw300) I still had energy for the most part. Now days its a struggle just to get out of bed each morning, and by the time I make it home from work and cook dinner I am spent, I just want to laydown and relax until bed time...which is where things flip and get weird. I struggle sleeping, the past 4-5 months I've had to take an over the counter sleep aid just to sleep, and even with that there are nights I'm restless. Anyone have any experience with this, incite, advice???

I just wanted to wish you well. Hopefully they can figure out something that can help. If it turnes out it's Hashimoto's, there is a correlation between that and gluten sensitivity.

Keep us posted!

Hashimoto's was mentioned because thyroid issues run in my family. I will keep ya posted. I just want my energy back!

My doctors have sent me to a rheumatologist because of all the pain I've been experiencing. I've had chronic pain for over 5 years but haven't been sleeved a year yet and my pain that was supposed to magically disappear with weight loss is still here and strong as ever. Now i have to be tested for something auto immune. The rheumatologist i saw said it could be fibro. I can understand the fatigue. I can sleep 7 to 8 hours and wake up feeling like i need to sleep another 100 years. I always feel like death. Hopefully you can sort everything out and start to feel like yourself again. Sending hugs.

I am 4 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery and have not experienced any problems with my immune system. In general, most individuals that I talked with who have had weight loss surgery tend to be more resistant to the flu and other sicknesses. I suspect this is due to the Vitamin load that we take.

If you have problems sleeping that might be the cause of a lack of energy during the daytime. Prior to my surgery, I had sleep apnea. During the day, I found it hard to keep my eyes open and would sometimes doze off when I was with family. Those problems went away after surgery.

I have had a few autoimmune issues since surgery. Not the symptoms you mention exactly, but they are bothersome enough that I posted here about it a while back.

I now have a photo allergy (allergy to sun) as well as some other skin issues and a couple other possible things including face rash.

I'm interested to see if there is anyone else. I have been suspicious of a link to sleeve, but it could also be that I'm into my 40s now. I am 3 years out from sleeve, first symptom happened at 6 months out.

I haven't gotten sick in a long time, even with working at a school.

My dad had a RNY (age 70) in June. He's been in terrible joint pain since the surgery. They think it's PMR and started treating him with steroids. (Not ideal for losing weight as a diabetic....🤦🏻‍♀️)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
