Vitamin and B12 patches

Recommended Posts

Does anyone use the Vitamin and B12 Patches? My Dr does not have any experience with them. I'd like to know if they provide everything you need without having to swallow a pill.

I've used them for about 15 months now, all of my labs have been awesome. I use the Multivitamin, Iron, calcium/vit D and B12.

I was told not to use them, which disappointed me--thought it would be a good way to get around any swallowing problems. Maybe check with your nutritionist if your doctor doesn't have an opinion?

Great! Did you buy them from this site? I hate the thought of swallowing MORE pills :)

I initially bought them here, but found a coupon code on another WLS site and now buy them directly from PatchMD.

My doc and dietitian were initially skeptics of the patch, but enough of us in our program are now using them successfully that they've turned into believers. I had a terrible time with nausea from all the oral Vitamins so these have been amazing for me.

My program requires us to go to support groups. I am pre-op with no surgery date yet. I am just getting started but at this first support group they had a rep there from a pharmaceutical company. She told us about a B12 nasal spray and said our physician would prescribe it for us and depending upon the copay you might not pay anything for it. With our program they do a mail order prescription but basically it's one nostril per week and keeps your B12 levels at a very steady level so your not depleting what is stored in your body. She also mentioned that once you deplete and start having symptoms it's harder to get your levels up and they are finding the symptoms stick around. I haven't read much yet on the study to support this but the spray is called NASCOBAL Nasal Spray. The company was Endo Pharmaceuticals and they also have this kit that comes with Vitamins, Iron, Calcium and the spray the copay could be 0 or 25 per month depending on your insurance. I thing they call it Nutrition Direct. Hope any of this info helps!

I just give myself a B12 injection once a week. I'm still pre-surgery but my b12 was ridiculously low and super symptomatic. My body wouldn't absorb sublingual so I switched to shots. Super easy.

I get the rx for single use b12 vials and syringes but I know there's clinics or med spas that offer them cause I've totally seen groupons for them. They're super easy. I do sub q but some people do IM.

My doctor said the same thing. I signed up the the mail order nasal spray and it was over $600 a month. My insurance only covers brand name meds at 50% and there is no generic alternative. It was going to cost me over $300 a month out of pocket. My doctor said he isn't familiar with the patch, but agreed to let me try it for 6 months. He said if my labs come back fine I can continue with it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I can't afford the spray.

I ordered a 6 month supply of the patch through this website and it was $100...I'll check out Amazon and the other websites too!

Even if you've had trouble swallowing pills initially, by several months out you should be able to handle them. No need to go broke for specialty vitamins--just get a bottle of pills. Speaking personally, I've been using the pills since day one. Maybe a little tough the first week or so, but now I just take them all . . .

Some surgeries other than sleeve have trouble w absorption and liquid or Patches mightwork better than pills. I think they should all be subscription so you can use insurance and take it off yo your taxes too because it's required.

I initially was using the chew-able Vitamins from my doctors office. However, I had to take nausea medicine every time I took them because they made me sick. I got to the point I just quit taking them which I know is not a good idea. I decided to try the Patches just this week; even though my nutritionist doesn't recommend them when I asked her pre-op. She said they are new and studies haven't been done to show the absorption and long term effects.

I am trying out the multivitamin plus, B12/ Energy, and D3/ Calcium patch this month. I am going to see how I feel on the patches. I also have been struggling with Vitamin D and B12 deficiency for well over a year prior to surgery so. I may supplement those with sublingual drops as I take more than the normal dosage, advised by my physician.I will update after a month as to how its going.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
