Fears of Malnutrition

Recommended Posts

Can those further out from their procedures share any experience with Vitamin deficiencies? I am considering the mini bypass and scared about malnutrition. I met a lady who had bypass done many years ago whose teeth were very yellow because of a deficiency.

You will need to take supplements for the first year and should be reassessed after that to see if you will require MORE than a Multivitamin which you should take the rest of your life.

Since the original poster (OP) is considering a mini gastric bypass and not a sleeve or lap band, she'll definitely need lifelong supplementation if she opts to undergo this procedure.

How did this lady know her teeth yellowing was caused by Vitamin deficiencies? I have talked with 2 dentists and they both assured me that the Calcium in our teeth is locked in and doesn't leach out. The only thing they warned me about was acid reflux while sleeping - that the acid can cause tooth erosion and other issues.

Vast majority gain the weight back. I have multiple other issues and have various forms of malnutrition/vitamin problems but it isn't like death is on my door every 5 minutes.

I don't know about mini bypass per se, but Vitamin deficiencies are rare as long as you keep on top of your supplementation.

Thanks so much for the responses, guys! @Airstream88, I'm not 100% sure, we had a brief conversation, but she said her doctors told her it was a Vitamin D deficiency I believe. Her teeth were visibly yellow. Her hair was also very thin on top.

Am I the only one who feels like I have to choose between major reflux (sleeve) or malnutrition (MBP)??

A lot of people have Vitamin D deficiency- not just people who have weight loss surgery. I had it before I had surgery. It's fine now (and has been for awhile) because I take supplements. And again, vitamin deficiency is rare in people who keep on top of their supplements. Most people who have problems with that are slacking off on their Vitamins.

im not surely if a vitamin D deficiency would cause her hair issues. I've heard that can be a problem with zinc or Iron deficiency, though. My guess is she's not being consistent with taking her supplements.

Do you currently have reflux? I haven't had any acid reflux problems or GERD since being sleeved. If you didn't have reflux prior to surgery, it usually won't be a problem afterward.

I concur. I had pre-existing deficiencies in Vitamins D and A prior to bariatric surgery.

It's estimated that 60+ percent of the U.S. population has Vitamin D deficiency due to lack of outdoor time combined with increasing sunblock lotion usage.

My Vitamin A deficiency prior to surgery was multifactorial: I was prone to it due to hypothyroidism, and my processed food/fast food diet with very few green veggies ensured I'd be deficient.

Vitamin D deficiency will thin your hair out.

Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency can be rather nonspecific and include fatigue, altered mood and depression, insomnia, nonradicular back pain, arthralgias (particularly of the wrists, ankles, shoulders, and shins), proximal muscle weakness, headache, and Hair loss.< /span>

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
