Hi! The nutrition guideline book from my doc has conflicting info so I'd love to hear from you fine folks!

Tortillas, toast, rolls, etc...when did you start eating those? Any tips?

TIA!

My guide says avoid grains til two months out. I have had crackers and some pretzels when I feel like I need something that won't make me sick. I had surgery 5/8, so I have just a little longer but not sure I could eat more than 1/4 piece of toast.

Honestly? That's what got a lot of us this fat to begin with. I'm planning on avoiding those foods as much as I can til I'm in maintenance. They're trigger foods for me. My nutritionist/surgeon puts their patients on a strict low-carb, high-protein plan, and that seems to be the case for most bariatric patients, from my research.

I'm consigning them to history.

My Dad was a baker so this is a challenge but I know bread is a very particular weakness of mine, I mean when I've travelled round the world I have asked to go into the back of bakeries!

Adios doughboy!

Oh gosh can't remember how soon (15 mos post-RNY) but the first nibble was a spicy tuna roll (6 pieces) of which I could only eat one. I removed the rice and just ate the spicy tuna. I can now eat an entire roll but it's pushing it. I never eat bread (too filling) potatoes and Pasta sometimes but it's a difficult food to eat and I used to love these bad carbs.

Mine says no bread, Pasta, tortillas or rice for one year.

I am 4 weeks out and now allowed 1/2 a piece of whole grain/whole wheat toast, 2 whole grain crackers, brown rice, quinoa and there is one more I can't remember. I am on what is considered a "soft diet" at this point. Carbs are not bad! We need carbs it's the kind of carbs you eat that makes the difference and causes weight gain. Everyone handles things differently though and some may not be able to eat these things and every plan is different. I'm good with the half slice of toast I don't feel full I don't feel sick I also eat it with an over easy egg on it for Breakfast. So I am getting Protein and Fiber.

No one needs bread.

Breads are energy sources and contain nothing else we need.

If you need the energy and don't get it from other sources, fine.

I am four years out, three at goal and they are not a regular part of my diet.

Toast has very little fiber even whole wheat toast. Veggies have much more fiber. fruit has fiber. Brown rice, quinoa, etc have a little bit of fiber.

Bread, tortillas, crackers, potatoes, white rice are negligible sources of fiber and have nothing else we NEED.

Can they be part of a healthy diet? Maybe, but saying we NEED them is wrong.

Mmm reading comprehension does wonders. I didn't say you NEED bread I said you need carbs, not tons of carbs, but you do need energy to sustain life. Sure you can get carbs from fruits and veggies too, but where I am at I cannot have those yet, but my dr allows whole wheat while grain toast. Actually the fiber is not negligible and what I eat also has Protein in it! I eat flat out and it's pretty good stuff. Bread is not evil, bread doesn't make you fat, it's over consumption and poor choices. I never said everyone needs bread because bread is life. I said that bread isn't bad, carbs aren't bad. If you have an issue with it then yeah maybe rethink eating it. I also never said anything about cracker, tortillas, potatoes or anything else you said. Bread can contain other things you NEED if you are choosing the proper source and again not over indulging in these sources.

No but you said one needed carbs and the OP was asking about bread/rolls/tortillas specifically.

You also suggested you got your fiber from toast.

So I was elaborating for the sake of the OP so she didn't get the idea she needed the carbs she asked about and to help her understand toast wasn't a good way to get fiber in her diet.

You do you! I'm just replying to her!

I would like to see the label of your bread showing it has a lot of fiber in half a slice. And by a lot, I mean more than 3-4 grams.

I didn't say it was evil I said you didn't need it. Now who is having reading comprehension trouble?

And I will admit I'm surprised your surgeon allows you toast before applesauce or yogurt, both sources of carbs.

But as I said you do you!

Ok, I'm gonna apologize, I reacted quickly because you were rude and insulting. I stand by what I said, but...

Flat out isn't what I call toast, so I will admit when you said toast I figured you meant bread since that's what the poster asked about.

Anyhow, I will argue that we don't need any refined carbs for a good six months. I never said they were evil but I would argue that no one needs REFINED carbs.

But flat out is better than most.

Still, its refined and we don't need it, there are better choices.

Awfully high REFINED carb for my diet, and not a significant source of river, even now at goal where I have been for three years. And I run 15-20 miles per week and do 4-5 hours of yoga class per week. These are the 100% whole wheat and 100% whole wheat "light"...

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
