Anyone become pescatarian after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Seriously guys I have major problems digesting foods like beef/steak (not mince so much) and definitely chicken. I'm seriously thinking about cutting these out of my diet and just become a pescatarian. Anyone done this after the sleeve? I hate eating. Seriously hate it. If I didn't have to do it I wouldn't.

It isn't a bad idea if beef and chicken don't agree with you. I hate labels though, because there may be a perfectly digestible dish that has bacon bits in it, and suddenly you can't have it because it contains pork.

Of course, for people with religious preferences, etc.. those food restrictions are important identity-makers. But it sounds like steering clear of non-digestible foods will be born from physical comfort, rather than spiritual comfort. Thus.. no real reason for the label ;)

Sorry to hear about you hating to eat.. does it hurt? I enjoy eating as much as I ever did, maybe more so (things taste better).

I tried a steak tonight for dinner and threw it up almost immediately. That's actually a first. It's feels very uncomfortable for me to eat. I actually haven't tried bacon since I had the surgery. I have certain foods that give me triggers of feeling bad like citrus or acidic foods, chicken, ice cream, and milk based products. Maybe I'm just feeling sorry for myself at the moment. 9 months out and thought it would get better.

@facebro29 I tired it for lent and it was a complete failure for me. Too few options on what to eat when I was out.

It was pure hell. I was hungry all the time. I mean it was a good experience for Lent. Since I wanted to suffer some, that was the point. I would never ever do that to myself again. I'm still suffering health wise from that experience.

If you can't tolerate these foods anyway you basically have nothing to lose. However, it seems odd you are having this many issues with foods. What has your doctor said about it?

Acidic foods also cause me trouble. I suspect it's to do with our messed-up acid post op. Are you still on an acid reducer?

The dairy issues may be a lactose intolerance. Have you tried Lactaid or Fairlife milk?

Steak and chicken are notorious, but mostly because they are so dense and heavy. Do you also have trouble with something like meatballs or chicken pot pie? And if you ARE still on an acid reducer, maybe that's why the dense Protein is being a PITA. It takes acid to break that stuff down.

Experiment, experiment, experiment. Add diced tomatoes and salt to your raw hamburger before forming the patty, and only eat 1-2oz at a sitting.. maybe you can retrain your tummy.

Don't try plain steak or a chicken breast until you are eating ground meat without a problem.

Thanks berry. I'm not in th me reflux tablets anymore came off them in Jan this year. I can eat ground beef/mince so I do try to stick with those. Having a cup of tea right now with lactose free milk to see if that will help.

What would be the point in increasing the acid content of the meat? Tomatoes are high acid.

It sounds like he has a stricture, and should contact his Doctor.

Of course contacting Doc is always a good idea when there is a question. I'm not hearing stricture, but that's just me.

Increasing the acid could help the body in its digestion. Could make things worse. Don't know for sure, that's why I said experiment. ;)

Facebro... glad to hear ground beef works. It does better for me as well.

I am about 11 weeks post op and still eating soft foods and salads mainly. I have tried the lean ground beef, turkey sausage, steak and I throw it up. I am not in any discomfort or pain but it just doesn't sit well with me. I can taste it ( one bite) and I am ok. But, more than 1 bite and it is coming up. So, I am still steering clear of it for the most part. I asked my doctor about it and they were not concerned at all especially since there is no pain or discomfort. Your stomach is being retrained to accept food and SMALL amounts of it. Some things will not sit well with you like others will. At least that is what I was told so I am going with it :) I stick to softer foods and my brain has totally reset itself. I no longer look at food like " I don't like this or I don't want this"... I just look at food and understand that I have to fuel my body and that's all. Its not always that easy but it gets easier every day for me. I think every person is different. You know what your body can tolerate and what it can't. As long as you are not in pain or discomfort and you are getting the nutrients you need, all is good.. Good luck.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
