Hard to digest meat

Is anyone having trouble digesting meat?

Whenever I eat even a small amount of meat, fish, tuna, or eggs I feel terrible! Like I've been punched in the chest!

I can't even swallow chicken... I start feeling nauseated as soon as I taste it.

I don't have problems with ground beef if it's in chili or stew.. This really disturbs me, I love meat!! 😣

Yes, for many (me included) meat will cause the most restriction. At 10 months out I can still get full on just a few bites of meat. That is a good benefit of the bypass and the reason my dietician says "protein first" when I eat a meal. I will get more restriction quicker. A rule of thumb for most is that the denser the food is, the more restriction it will cause and that is great for weight loss. So maybe eat a little less of the meat and chew really thoroughly. After surgery I found that softer foods such as chili and Soups went down much easier than harder foods such as steak and chicken. So that is what I primarily stayed with. I have included some recipes at the end of the following article. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

If you want to eat chicken, it is best to tenderize it. For example place a chicken breast in a pot of Water. Add a couple chicken bouillon cubes to the water and slow cook it for a couple hours. The chicken should come apart with a fork.

You might use a meat tenderizer to soften steaks. That will make it more palatable.

Putting other ingredients in with the meat will help.

Tuna=tuna salad,

instead of a hamburger patty, make a meatball (usually has breadcrumbs, eggs, etc.. might have to switch breadcrumbs for something else if bread is a no go for you)

sauces, gravies, and the like will help.

Dark meat poultry has more fat inside the meat, so does much better than the breast.

[For someone else, these add-ins might make the meat a slider. So if you need your Protein to be restrictive, these are the solutions to avoid. ]

If these don't work, you may just have to become a vegetarian! ;)

I have trouble with a lot of meat too. I've found the Al Fresco chicken sausages without the casing go down well and some fish if I have a sauce. I've also been doing crock pot chicken with low carb BBQ Sauce so it pulls apart. The idea of most meats makes me want to gag. I'm just over a month post op.

I'm over a year and a half out and there are still things I cannot tolerate some chicken and all pork. It's just something you will feel out along the way. Try something and if it doesn't work, don't fret, just wait a few months and try it again. It's taken over a year for me to be able to eat any chicken at all which for me was miserable because it's my favorite meat.

8months out and still can't tolerate chicken unless it is shredded and in a Soup or stew.

meat and chicken still hard to digest at 2 years post op. I prefer fish if having solid Protein as other Proteins can be so uncomfortable in stomach. I find I eat mainly vegetarian meals with protein as a side thing. I do have Protein Shakes and yogurt to keep protein levels up.

I've read that many people eat protein and veggies as meals but I find that difficult to stick to as so uncomfortable and if I eat too much of anything it can lead to vomiting.

I am 14 months post-op (RNY) and I've never been able to digest meat with the exception of ground beef. I love fish of any kind and I tolerate chicken. eggs no problem either but my go to Protein is yogurt. Love my yogurt.

Just over 1 year post op here, I find ground meats to be the easiest to eat still as well, I can eat chicken and tuna if its moist but if for some reason its overly dry I will get full on it very quickly and it seems to be harder to digest.

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
