Surgery Scheduled for July, Anyone else?

Recommended Posts

I realize that's a fair while away, but I would love to connect with others scheduled for surgery around that time. Maybe we can keep each other sane while waiting.

I'm in San Diego. Washington is beautiful!

Where are you in the pre-op stuff? My surgeon has me on the liver shrinking diet for 6 months! I'm 15 pounds down with three weigh ins.

Right now I'm all finished. I've just got to maintain and wait for July 7th. Insurance has approved. It sucks that my surgery is scheduled so far out! I am on a cancellation list, in case someone cancels then I can get it done sooner, but who knows if that will happen or not.

I love it here! It really is a beautiful place! Ive been to Cali twice for movie premieres with Disney, but It was all work and really no play. Most of the state I saw from a car window going from interview to interview.

I am scheduled for surgery on July 10th. Originally was scheduled for April but I had to push it back. I'm done with all of my prerequisites for surgery except a chest Xray and my PCP approval. I have to start my pre-op diet at the end of June, although I've already started watching my diet and have lost 20 lbs. I can't wait, but have waited this long, what are a couple more months. Good luck to all of us!

Located in northern NJ.

I need clearance from Pulmonary with regard to my asthma, but they won't give it to me because asthma is an "exacerbation condition" and I might be clear NOW but struggling THEN. So I have to see them right before.

I also need my psych eval but I can't find someone with hours I can make to do it. I started this process last year and had to drop out, but I saw a recommended psychologist then and didn't like her, so I won't go back. I told her all about my attempts to lose weight in the past, and the next thing she said was "why don't you try Weight Watchers again?" This was after I told her I'd tried WW FIVE TIMES in the past and never kept it off!! So yeah. Need to call around.

You guys are so lucky you only have two weeks of liquid diets before. Liver Shrinking for six months is not the most fun I've ever had. But at least I get to practice and get used to it, right? 🙄

I'm so excited that there are others waiting on July. I had hopped to be in the hospital in May so that I could use the whole summer for really getting my walking in and getting the hang of this new life. I was SOOO disappointed that it wouldnt be until July. A week before my 37 bday. I cried and ragged. I've gone though so much and to have to wait another 3 months.....Well, its been about a week since I found out so I'm feeling a little better.

I just found out that I am not eligible for FMLA because my company (I'm a contractor on Camp Pendleton) does not have 50 employees in a 75 mile radius. I've asked about taking unpaid leave since I won't have enough paid vacation to cover the 4 weeks my surgeon mandates, and I've gotten no response. My surgeon's receptionist says they really can't predict exactly when surgery will be because it's based on both insurance approval and the assistant surgeon's schedule. So now I'm kinda up in the air.

They also say some of the tests mandated by my insurance have 6 month expirations and others have 12 month expirations. So if it's pushed back too far I may need to redo some testing. I'm really not happy about not qualifying for FMLA!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
