Sleeping medicine post-op

Recommended Posts

My surgery date is March 24th and currently I have to take Seroquel, which is an antipsychotic medicine that helps with my moods and to help me sleep. However, a side effect of Seroquel is weight gain and I believe it may have been a small culprit with me as well as my PCOS.

I want to talk to my doctor about switching me to another sleeping/anti depressant mediciation without weight gain as a side effect, but I have a high tolerance to certain medications and seroquel has been the only one ive tried to work on me.

I've tried ambien, but i had hallucinations with it and I slept walk.

Trazodone did not work.

I've been on Prozac for anti depression and Celexa but both turned me into a zombie.

My goal is to find something that doesn't turn me into a zombie, but will help me sleep without hallucinating and sleep walking or waking up feeling hung over.

What's worked for you?

I take one 10mg Melatonin every night about 45 minutes before I want to go to sleep and I am out like a light. It has worked wonders in helping me get to sleep, stay asleep, and awaken refreshed and ready to start the day.

I take Seroquel as well . But they will not give that to me in the hospital after my surgery. But a lot of pain medicine. There is a lot of pain involved mostly gas but now 7 days out is worth it. And I Canna think that day when they're done with the surgery going to have a different opinion. Just make sure you take all the pain medicine they give you in there trust me you are going to need it. The Seroquel I take it but I take it around 9 pm.

Seroquel has made me gain weight and has also played a part in making it hard for me to lose weight, so I really need to take something other than seroquel.

And unfortunately, I have a very high tolerance to pain medicine, and it does nothing for me, unless its a very high dosage, and I would rather not be on pain medication for long.

Long term, I need to go off of seroquel because I have a feeling it will slow me down when it comes to losing weight. I'm trying to find out what other options I have.

Melatonin is iffy with me. I have to take multiple doses of it in order to go to sleep and stay asleep. Unfortunately, I think I'm one of those people who have to have prescription strength sleeping medicine.

On another note though, I'm hoping and praying that the surgery will get rid of my insomnia and help me sleep better so I can stop taking medication to sleep, but if it does not, I need something pretty strong that will help me sleep and stay asleep without feeling hungover when I wake up.

I was on Seroquel (with Klonipin) for sleep before and after surgery. Didn't take it the night of surgery. Before the surgery Seroquel made me have the munchies and bad cravings so I was gaining weight. After surgery I didn't notice this at all so seemed to being doing fine 1 month out. I decided at that point to get off of it anyway because of a little bit of research (and I do mean just a small bit of Dr. Google) I'd done on how it messes with the way your body metabolizes and stores fat. I was worried it was slowing down my weight loss or would slow down my weight loss. My psychiatrist was ok with that so now I'm just on Klonipin and doing fine. I was on a pretty low dose of Seroquel, though, because higher doses caused restless leg syndrome for me. How much are you on?

Meant to mention that I've also been on just about everything else for sleep so feel your insomnia pain. Also, I'm one of those people who can't sleep at all Oxycodone. I was wired all night after the surgery so apparently I respond to morphine the same way. I went home and religiously took the Oxycodone because of the pain, but I slept very poorly even with the sleep meds for 2-3 weeks I was taking it. It made the recovery hard. In retrospect I should have asked for something else for pain.

I take the same medication. I had bypass on 11/14/16 and have lost 57 pounds so far. No problems with weight gain.

Have you ever been on Zoloft or Prozac? Both of them *can* have the side effect of helping you sleep. I took Zoloft for an extended period years ago and it normalized my sleep. Also, do you have sleep apnea?

I don't have sleep apnea and I was on Zoloft for a while and it made me feel sick, after that I did switch to Prozac but it never made me sleepy

Did you try regular Ambien or Ambien CR?

I take Ativan, took it before surgery too. It works well for sleep and anxiety, for me at least. I take Abilify at night (mood stabilizer) and it also helps me sleep.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
