Need advice: Protein drinks

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm 7 days post op and I am having a really hard time tolerating the Premier Protein premade drinks. They are so gross & Too sweet for me. I also think they are irritating my stomach. I wake up every morning with lose bowels. I know, I'm sorry TMI, but I didn't know who to ask? . Can anyone recommend another way to get my Protein in besides the doctor approved protein yogurts? Maybe some that aren't so sweet, or clear ones, or lactose free ones that are clear? Thank you in advance

Also* how soon after surgery did some of you take your Vitamins because the flinstone ones make me vomit. I was in the ER 3 days post op because it was uncontrollable. Someone said they make vitamin patches is this true?

Sounds like you've got a sweetener intolerance going on. Both the vomiting and the diarrhea are what happens when someone consumes something the body doesn't digest well. I had similar issues before I figured out I am highly intolerant to sucralose, (which is what the premier shakes are sweetened with), not sure about your Vitamins, but it's the preferred sweetener for most sugarless drinks, yogurts, etc. Try switching to Stevia sweetened foods, which is easier to digest. You will know within a day or so... Your nut will be very helpful if you find this is your problem.

For Protein Shakes, try a Protein Powder and use the Torani sugar free coffee Syrup for flavoring. My favorite shake is vanilla flavored Jay Robb Protein powder and salted caramel syrup with soy milk. Yum, yum!

You can also try unflavored egg white Protein powder and add it to your Soups, cottage cheese, etc.

Best of luck to you!

You can add beneprotein to soaps, drinks (any of your clear liquids), pudding, & Gelatin. It's 6 grams a scoop. I always put 2 scoops for 12 grams. Fat free milk has Protein. I like the Unjury protein, they have a sample package.

I had the same problem. Now I do 8-10 oz 1% milk plus 1 scoop GENEPRO (30 grams of protein) flavorless Protein  powder. Love this combo. Not sweet. Filling.

I'm only 3 weeks post op but I've been using the Unjury Protein powder for years. It's delicious. They also have a chicken flavor powder that you can make into broth and unflavored that you can put into almost anything. The chocolate splendor I make with skim milk or almond milk and to me it just tastes like chocolate milk.

Try getting an Vitamin geared for bariatric patients. My doc's office promotes Celebrate Vitamins and they're pretty good. They have chewables in various flavors, and they also have capsules for down the road. I know a lot of people on here use the Vitamin Patches but I haven't looked into those myself. Either way I would try to get something soon that will work for you since getting your daily Vitamins in is crucial.

I'll second the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury brand of Protein. I used it during the pre-op and post-op phase. It's also common for things you used to like to taste horrid at this stage. Things I enjoyed prior to surgery I couldn't stand for the first two weeks after.

You may want to start adding something like Benefiber to your Protein drinks. It may seem counter-intuitive to take Fiber when you're experiencing diarrhea, but products like that can help absorb some of the excess Water. I went through the same thing so you're not alone in this.

Shamrock farms makes a delicious chocolate Protein Shake called Rockin' Refuel. It's 30g Protein and 190 cals for 12 ounces. It's in the dairy case in my grocery store.

For powders, my favorite is Unjury. 20g protein and 100 cals when mixed with Water. 28g protein and 180 cals if mixed with fat free milk.

I'm nearly at goal and I drink them just because I like them

I'm a vegan and I like the Svelte shakes from Walmart, they are down the aisle with the ready to drink tea and bottled Water. They would probably be easier on your stomach than the whey Protein.

I cannot stomach Protein Shakes at all. I need a thinner version. I use Lift Protein by Atkins, it comes in 3 flavors. It has 20 grams of protein and drinks like a Water.

Another Protein option is Isopure. They are watery/fruity flavored, not milky which I love. You can get them at GNC.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
