Anyone know of Dr De Bruyne Chris

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

I'm sorry if I've offended anyone by not going with Dr De Bruyne. I know he is a fantastic surgeon, however the idea of going to have surgery on my own in another country is too much for me at the moment as I'm not stable enough. As I've indicated before this, I suffer a lot from depression and I can't predict how I would react the night before in Brussels when the nerves take over me.

I've had a full consultation with a medical team in Liverpool, and every aspect of my current health has been looked into. I would rather have the security of mind now that my illnesses have been properly assessed in advance, than getting to Brussels, and possibly turned away or the proper care wasn't prepared for my intracranial pressure. I worry about the pressure in my head every day, and I can imagine the worries being ten times as worse on the day of surgery. I also get quite severe headaches after flying so that is another factor I've taken into account.

I think staying in the UK is the best choice for me because of my health and concerns. My surgeon is Mr Sigurdsson and I have checked him out thoroughly. I've also been assured that Mr Sigurdsson is experienced in neurological conditions such as mine.

If I didn't have such illnesses, I wouldn't hesitate to go to Brussels. In fact, if anyone was to ask me who to get banded with I'd say Dr De Bruyne because of his track record!

Again, I'm sorry if any of you are disappointed and think I'm making the wrong decision, however I have been considering this for the past two years and have weighed everything up. I value all of your advice and support.

Thank you

Sarah xx

Thanks Gillian and Slinky :)

Both of your advice given over the past few days has let me grow my confidence enough to book the surgeon. I've went from being unsure to certain this is what I need and want. I'm just really excited now that I've got my surgery date :D I haven't felt so much hope in such a long time!

I started my pre-op diet early this morning just to make sure I've got a fighting chance at losing enough weight before surgery :) As Tesco says, every little helps :)

Look forward to sharing stories throughout our journeys :)

Hi Sarah

This is your journey and we can only tell you what are experiences have been to date and how we found the intial experience.

Where you have your surgery and who with is your choice. The fact that you have made such a big leap of faith in such a short period of time is reflective of where you are in your decision making process. If this is the space you feel comfortable with then go for it.

Keep us posted on how you get on and don't ever think that there is a silly or stupid question. Remember that this is a lovely supportive forum and there are plenty of lovely people here who will answer you and support you with lots of positivity.

Take care and take itall one day at a time!

Sarah,

I completely agree with Gillian, Slinky and MummiesBB, you really should do what's right for you and only you know what that is. Who cares who you've chosen to get banded by, so long as the result is the same........... we are all in the same boat, and i for one would love to get to know you better on here and follow your exciting journey x

I'm excited for you because you are about to do something wonderful for yourself.. For the first time ever you are going to successfully lose weight and keep it off.. It's life changing. And the buzz you'll get will be fantastic!. I had my band done January 09 with chris in Belgium, can't fault any bit of the hosp, staff, doctor.. But I have all my aftercare package provided by WLS in UK. Cannot fault them either one bit.. Good luck with your positive life changing decision x

Hey Slinky .. I was going to go with Dr. Chris but found Nuffield hospital group was similar price so i went with them and didnt have to travel. Nuffield is a charity status so althought they are private its a non profit organisation so its not top end costs ..

I wondered where all the uk people were hanging out as the uk specific thread seemed a little quiet :) now i found u all i will keep my eyes on this thread :)

Thanks i have done well but its been hard work but worth it .. u have done well too so close to goal :)

Hey Ladies,

Hope everyone's had a good weekend. It it just me or do other peoples bands go a bit funny on them sometimes? Had a fill on 12th Jan and then lost another ten kilo's. Thought i was at restriction because for the first week, could hardly manage 4/5 mouthfuls. It then got easier and easier to eat and i kept my plates to side plate size. Drinking also got easier. So now i'm maintaining my weight but not losing anymore. The last two days however, everything's been getting stuck and even Fluid. It's a bit like i felt just after a fill. So i'm trying to slow my eating down again and sip instead of gulp. Is this normal? X

I had a fill on the 14th january and am going through exactly the same thing .. I know i need another small fill but am also getting stuck, can even be something like Soup or jelly, i think examining whats going on, for me it has been silly things like not chewing enough, not gulping liquid, eating too fast... the band had loosened since last fill but i think i am just a little lazy and i quite often forget i have a band .. i still need another small fill tho and am now being very very careful how i eat etc and i havent got stuck since so that did work :)

If u still cant get fluids down properly then maybe go in for a tiny unfill .. u should consult the doctor if fluids are a real problem ..

Thanks Cazzy,

Like you said, it's probably because i feel thirsty and like to 'down' drinks. I'm fine if i sip slowly but like you said, it's so easy to forget you have a band and attempt to eat'normally'! Definitely not complaining about increase in restriction, just confused at the mind of the band ;)

hi crazy i think we all happy for anyone to join in with the talk here even if people have not gone to dr chris. for me dr chris was my first choice cos of the low complication rate and the uk aftercare, its also good that you can see him in london afterwards so he can follow your journey through. really for me leaving in london it was just as easy to get on the eurostar and go to brussels and do it as go to somewher in the uk. but i did not go to him because it was cheaper..even though it was cheaper really because i had heard how good he was, and the uk helpline europesurgery i heard was good too! but yes if your finding there is not many being who are writing who went where you went them just join in with us guys. chris has done more g band operations then anyone else in europe so there are bound to be more people talking in forums who been to him then uk surgeons.

Hi hunny, my daughter was banded by Mr Sigurdsson back in 2005. Her port is just under her boobs, which I think is much better than in the tum.

She lost 8 stone, but has had 3 pregnancies since and is now in the process of losing all the baby weight. good luck to you xx

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
