Confession: I drink soda. Anyone else?

Recommended Posts

So I made it 8 weeks on the "no soda" rule. I was an absolute addict before surgery and now whenever my husband has a soda I have a few sips. I've learned that any more than a few sips is uncomfortable so I limit myself to that. Dr Pepper was my love in life before and I haven't and don't plan to even have a tiny sip of that because that's a door I don't want to open!

So far I've had no problems and from what I've read the whole "stretching your sleeve" thing isn't really an issue. I know that a lot of people can't drink it any more after surgery due to discomfort, but am I alone here? Not just vets but also those of us who are still losing?

Thanks!

Why is this a "confession"? Seems to me it's simply a choice you are making, good or not so good, depending on your surgeon's plan.

I am just over 3.5 years out and I drink Coke Zero. I didn't do so until I had permission at 6 months post op and I was only given permission because I was 100% compliant on all my other dietary restrictions.

What does your doctor say?

I haven't tried diet coke yet because I am sure I will begin having it for Breakfast again. I am doing fine without it. I have taken several trips and there isn't much to choose from on the plane that isn't soda, juice or liquor. That is when I want one.

Nope..not me..I was a complete Coke Zero addict and feel like it hindered weight loss for me in the past. I will not be addicted again especially since I'm only 6 weeks out..a couple of sips isn't worth possible hurting myself and craving it all over again.

I'm grateful that I was never that into soda. Although they made a vanilla Pepsi with "real" sugar that is pretty heavenly...

Starbucks iced white mochas, on the other hand, may become an issue for me, lol!

I take sips when my stomach is upset and I need to burp. Sometimes because I want to. I don't think I could handle a full serving nor do I want to at the moment.

In my opinion

If you treat food/ drinks as forbidden or naughty then you could set yourself for set backs or binges .

I'm not sure what your issues are with your path to becoming obese. I don't know where you are now in establishing a better relationship with food.< /p>

We have to learn how to make better choices and learn to accept the times when we screw up and get back to healthy eating.

I'm not perfect by any means but I am trying to be on program as possible. It is very easy for us to know and say what needs to be done but living it is different.

Good luck and much love to you! You can do this!

It was just sort of a silly title for the post.

The first time I drank it was only 1 sip and that night I looked over my plan and it doesn't mention it one way or another past 8 weeks. I will mention it to him at my next check up but it doesn't seem to be hurting anything and like I said it's only a few sips.

Why did your doc make you wait til 6 months?

Thanks so much for the comments! I have been pretty solidly on plan since surgery except for a few days when my Water or Protein goals just weren't going to happen.

My relationship with food has changed. Although there are still things I enjoy eating and have to limit it's mostly just about meeting my goals so I don't feel crappy, I have overeaten twice since surgery (both times were still a fraction compared to what I used to eat) and paid the price. After that I just don't have much desire to overeat and the types of foods I'm eating aren't things that tempt me to stuff myself, lol.

Like I said there are still things I crave and enjoy and I occasionally give in but make sure that it's just a tiny portion, same as the soda. I also could not come close to drinking a full serving or even half. My weight has gone down steadily although slower than others (my starting BMI was somewhat low) and I am learning to look at food as a tool to be healthy instead of a cure for boredom or depression. It's a learning curve for all of us and I have for sure made mistakes a few times but like you said, we just have to get back on track. Thanks!

His plan actually called for a year. He gave me an exception because I was losing steadily and compliant everywhere else.

I was a Diet Coke fiend and gave it up 6 months prior to surgery. I honestly don't miss it... and when I stopped, my sweet tooth went away.

Now it is so unappealing, there's no chance of me taking it up again.

My downfall was Diet Pepsi! After my first consultation with my surgeon I decided to cut out all caffeine, so there went my addiction to Diet Pepsi, coffee, etc... I figured it would be easier to get through the caffeine withdrawals before the surgery. One less thing to worry about during recovery.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
