I have become addicted to My 600 Pound Life. I know that I was never that big but I compare my experience with RNY surgery to what they are going through. I know everyone's experience is different but I don't get some of these people.

I didn't get in to the show until after my surgery, but I can't stop watching haha. I find it both extremely frustrating and very inspiring, depending on the episode haha

I'm hoping, praying, and working hard toward achieving continued success.

I'm also learning to accept the fact that this journey is a long distance marathon, and I can't be so focused on getting to my destination/goal, that I forget to enjoy the journey itself.

You know what's a funny (odd) observation I just made?

All the comments about this show and how it drives people crazy that some of these people aren't compliant with their surgeries and how they like Dr Now because he doesn't put up with excuses? People who point the same things out to others in this very forum are told they aren't being supportive and are called bullies.

Why is that?

haha, because it's different when it is someone else!! THEY need to hear the unvarnished truth, but not ME.

A few years ago, I was almost 700 lbs and had large lymphedema tumors, so I contacted the show My 600 lbs Life, because I loved the show, and my life was beyond miserable and I needed the help that surgery could provide.

I sent photos and video footage of myself to the producers of the show, and they eventually decided to send a camera crew to my home for roughly a week to film an episode.

I was told after filming part one, I would have relocate temporarily to Houston, Texas to film a doctor's evaluation with Dr. Now, and later finally have surgery. I agreed to EVERYTHING, because I was so desperate for surgery.

However, after the week of filming in my life in my home, and interviewing my family members, the camera crew packed up and left, and then no one associated with the production would take my calls or call me back and this went on for weeks, meanwhile I had already made preparations to move to Houston.

After a couple months of no contact, I finally made one more call, and I was told by some nameless associate of the production, that there wasn't any interest in filming the rest of the episode with me because I simply wasn't disabled enough and didn't have any real drama going on in my life, as I don't have any kids or a dysfunctional relationship with a horrible spouse.

Fast forward a year later I was finally able to get the awesome surgery that I needed via Medicare and while I was in the hospital recovering I received a call from someone associated with the show, and I was asked how I was doing and if I was still interested in shooting the rest of the episode. I hung the phone up without saying a word. Unbelievable!

I still enjoy watching the show because it provides life changing help to people who really need it, but the idea of having to exploit one's awful condition and life in order to receive desperately needed help is just terrible.

I'm so thankful that the episode didn't get produced because I would never truly want anyone to see me in that dreadful condition, and I soon after found the will and the strength to lose almost 250 lbs all on my own and I just got sleeved two weeks ago and I've lost another 25 lbs since then.

Btw, I'm looking forward to seeing the new season of the show as well as all of you!

The cost of the surgery is covered by the show, and they give a small amount of cash to cover relocation.

However, you would be responsible for all your costs of living once you're relocated.

Thanks @@Babbs for the Fat Doctor recommendation! I've been inhaling them. It's missing most the stuff I can't stand on My 600 Lb Life. The participants are smart, humble, grateful, not whiney, not belligerent, and follow doctor's orders. Imagine that.

Though I did cringe at the gal who sat down to eat with a serving platter of a dozen gigantic sausages and a half a loaf of buttered white bread.... I can eat a LOT of food and couldn't have made it through a quarter of her sausage extravaganza.

It seems like a reasonable trade off. These people get a life savings surgery that would likely cost at least $20-30,000, Dr Nowzardan gets exposure, and the show gets to make money. In order for the show to make money and pay for this surgery, they need people watching and people want to see extreme cases. They don't want to sit and just watch normal people who are overweight lose weight. I'm sure everyone knows somebody who is overweight. We tune in to watch the extreme examples. The price for getting this surgery is to expose yourself to the public. It seems like a reasonable cost if you are in a dire situation.

I never thought about the "drama" aspect of the show. But now that you mention it yeah they all have some sort of drama. Plus most if not all of them are unemployed. Free surgery plus Jerry Springer type fame I guess is good thing for them.

I've seen all of My 600 Lb life. I like it because it tells their people's stories! It was interesting to reference while going through the weight loss surgery process starting from my HW of 300.

Ok I am now hooked on the Fat Dr show. Just started watching on YouTube as I am in the states. Love this Dr. So much nicer than that Dr on the US show. Have to look away during the surgeries as can't watch that but good show.

I was introduced to the show back before I had surgery. I binged watched every episode that I could to get a better understanding of what was on the calendar. The show provided me with insight into the surgery as well as an appreciation for not being that size. I still watch it as a reminder of where I never want to go. That my new stomach is a tool, and that I need to maintain this tool.

Too many of the people profiled have drama. Lots of people claiming to have been molested as children. That they blame their food consumption on their families. Then there's those who appear to have control issues and only really go out with their family member/significant other to grocery shop, yet hate the looks from others. I have to wonder if these people go shopping to ensure that the person they're with buys the food that they want. Control issues.

What I find frustrating is that so many of the patients would not pass the required psych eval if they were going through their insurance company. They are not ready to make the changes necessary to be successful. They complain about everything and don't want to make the changes that are required.
