Band to sleeve failure and revision questions

Recommended Posts

I had my band converted to a sleeve 6 mos ago. The only weight I've lost was during the "prep" leading up to surgery. I do not feel restricted in any way and am able to eat more than I ever did with my band. I'm hungry even after having finished a meal 15 minutes prior. I'm nauseated from trying not to eat more "than I should be able to".

My question is related to revisions after having a lap band to sleeve conversion; have any of you had a band out over your sleeve? If so, do you feel restricted?

That is odd that you're able to eat more now that you have a sleeve. Most people get the sleeve after the band for 2 reasons: Because the band was causing complications, or because the band wasn't working as much as they expected. A lot of people get the revision because the sleeve has a higher/quicker weight loss rate than the band.

Have you talked to your doctor about this?

I was going to ask if maybe what you're feeling is cravings instead of hunger pangs. But I see where you said that you're feeling nauseous by trying not to eat more than you should be, which makes me think that you're actually feeling hunger pangs.

If I were you, I'd call my doctor and discuss this with them. My first assumption would be that they didn't remove as much stomach as most doctors do. I actually know of a woman whose doctor only removed 65% of her stomach, (while most doctors removed 85-90%) and she still felt hunger pangs.

I have spoken with the PA regarding my hunger pangs and was prescribed Zofran for the nausea. It's definitely not "head hunger" as I can feel my stomach churning when I do not eat enough to satisfy. I'm stumped, honestly. I am depressed and feel like such a failure. They tell me to "reset" and start the post surgery diet again, but I'm hungry to the point of nausea and headaches. Just wondering if any one else has experienced this. I have found some articles that mention a band after sleeve, and was curious if anyone had in fact received this revision.

I've just started process to have my band revised to sleeve.

Make sure you're getting all your nutrients in.

And perhaps talking with doc about blood work maybe to check Vitamin levels/blood sugar.

Not saying this is you, but for me at times my stomach growls because I've gotten myself used to over eating at times. Try occupying yourself with another activity

Once a day? Maybe you need more? Have you discussed this with your dr?

Yeah that's exactly what my acid felt like. I never had GERD before so I didn't know what it was. Once my acid production caught up with my new stomach, it stopped.

You're feeling nauseated from trying not to eat more? Usually people get nauseated when you eat too much, not the reverse. Even with a working sleeve where one can only eat a mere 2 oz of food (every hour if need be), most don't get true "hunger" pains. I have to go over 16 hrs with zero food to have true hunger pains.

Something isn't right. I'd talk to your doctor or get a second opinion...

I had the revision to sleeve on the 29th and have lost a total of 33lbs since day of surgery. I definitely feel restriction, more than I had with the band. My stomach does churn some times but once I eat a tums all better. Do have some issues with head hunger, but if I drink some cold Water usually goes away. Hope things go better for you. Agree with Sai maybe talk to your surgeon or get second opinion.

I'm meeting with my doctors team Friday and am hoping to get everything out without being told I should "just reset" my diet from the beginning- as in full liquid diet. I am starting to wonder whether or not I was even sleeved! I'm wondering if maybe my band was removed and that was it. I'm so angry and humiliated I can't even sleep. Not for nothing, but even if they do agree to a revision, would I trust them again to do the surgery? Will I be able to afford the cost of whatever they decide??????

Update**

I met with my surgeons team and was put on Topomax to help control hunger pangs. I was sent for an UpperGI and Ultrasound of my abdomen to rule out any gallbladder issues ( possible reason for nausea). My Dr's office just called to say that I have a hiatal hernia and major reflux. I've been taking Prilosec religiously for years and do not ever have the burning sensation or reflux feeling.

I'm having an EGD Friday to determine the severity of said hernia and am praying that this will be the solution for my sleeve failure!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
