Newbie! Went to my first appointment today

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm Juniper and I'm new but I hope to be pretty active here. It seems like a good community.

I'm an American living in Taiwan so I will have this surgery here which will be a little easier financially. Taiwan generally has good healthcare.

I went to my first Bariatric appointment today and I was really impressed with the clinic, the staff, and the surgeon. Everything was smooth and everyone was friendly to me.

The surgeon suggested gastric bypass over sleeve because I have quite a sweet tooth. I also did a psych evaluation which I think went okay. I deal with some depression and anxiety but i take medication for it already.

My motivations for losing weight and being healthier are:

Emotionally: feeling more confident in my body. Feeling comfortable being in photos.

Medically: protecting my already weak joints, helping my Migraines and lower back pain. I want to have more energy and stamina. I want to be stronger and more flexible.

Physically: being lighter means I will not be subject to weight limits on experiences like zip lining or sorting. It's embarrassing to get turned away for being to heavy.

It will also be easier to lift my body for things like rock climbing maybe even pull ups one day.

I want to fit comfortably into seats on roller coasters and trains and airplanes.

Socially: I really would love for my partner to be able to carry me. I would love to be able to buy clothes here in Taiwan ( I have order literally everything offline now)

More about my body:

253lbs

5'7"

Size 18 pants

42DDD bra

Goal: 150lbs

Anyone have similar stats or body shape?

I'm looking for advice, friends, and support. Want to know more about me? Please ask away!

Thanks so much.

We have very similar body stats except I'm shorter (5'3"). I just had my surgery on December 13th. It has been very difficult but it will be worth it. Just stay hydrated after surgery. You got this!

It's like looking in a mirror. I'm in Canada and just started the process myself....still have lots of appointments to go before I get a date....

That's pretty cool that we're similar. I also have a lot more appointments to go to. I have to do their 6 month weight loss course before i qualify for insurance. So I'm thinking august 2017. A long way out. Ugh, I hope I don't gain even more weight by then.

You can do this. My surgery is not scheduled yet but I'm hoping that I get a February date as my last class is January 9th. Very similar body shape but I'm shorter and wearing a size 16 pant and weight is 232. Soooo looking forward to surgery date!

My stats were close

My highest weight ever was 255 had the band in 2013 and revision 11/14/16.

Weight at BEGINNING of revision was 244.4. i'm 5'3" wore an 18-20, bra 42DD, also and my stomach hangs over.

I think it hangs over like it does because I had 2 c-sections.

Since my surgery 11/14/16, I'm down to 218.8 stomach still hangs over, but I can tell it's not as heavy.

Looking forward to it getting smaller as I get smaller.

I AGREE WITH EVERYONE ELSE, YOU CAN DO IT

Here in Ontario it's covered by our government insurance plan but we have to go thru a bariatric program that consists of meetings and classes with nutritionist, social workers, psychiatrists, doctors and nurses before even meeting with the surgeon to get the final ok. Could take up to a year :(

So I'm looking at early October at the latest...and I know exactly where you're coming from...really hoping I don't gain more between now and then.

Yeah Taiwans a little backwards. My surgeon was basically like, yep let's go. But you need to do this rigamorole if you wan insurance to pay and oh I do.

I also have a chance to get a few grand knocked off the price if I agree to help advertise a specific brand of surgical equipment. I think it's just letting them use my photos. I'm a little torn. Privacy is important to me to an extent but so is affordability.

I'm also worried about gaining more weight before now and then. Maybe we can be surgery buddies if we have similar dates.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
