One year surgiversary! So happy with the results!

Recommended Posts

It's been a year!!! I can't believe how fast this time has passed. I started out low bmi (height 5'8.5", starting weight: 190 lbs.) I was always physically active, but my access weight was really holding me back from excelling at all I wanted to do and be as well as causing me great anxiety. I have three young kids, and the day of surgery I woke up and thought, what am I doing?!!! Once it was done, there was no turning back, so I ate what I was supposed to, walked all the time from the get go, and came to this forum for support!

This year has been one of the most amazing years of my life. As the weight melted off, I was able to be even more active, and the more active I became, the weight continued to come off. It was a cycle of health! My goal weight was 140, which I hit around 5 or 6 months post surgery. I hit my current weight about 8 months post surgery. I am now on the cusp of being underweight (124 lbs, I am guessing because I am so active), but I feel amazing! I have never felt so healthy. I do taekwondo twice a week and run a ton (this week I ran a total of 34 miles). I eat when I am hungry and stop when I am full. I still love food, but it just doesn't have the pull it used to have. It doesn't hold my thoughts hostage anymore! My husband is stoked, clothes are so fun to shop for and wear (I went from a size 14/16 to a size 2/4). I wore a bikini for the first time ever this summer! I am not self conscious to meet new people, and I don't have to pull my shirt out of my belly fat when I sit down anymore. Having gastric sleeve surgery is the greatest gift I ever gave myself!

Omg!! Thank you so much for your story. I am a low BMI at 35. I had my surgery Dec. 5th. I am so enthused by your story. I too am very active in crossfit, biiking and swimming but at 55 just couldn't keep the weight off. I seem to always be struggling with 30-50 pounds extra. I was afraid that I would lose the weight slowly or not all of it, but I am so stoked now after reading your story!

Congrats, you look great!

You look amazing!! Your story is inspiring for me...

Today is my 2 year sleeversary! My HW was 266 SW 232 today I weigh 157. I still would like to loose another 10-15 pounds but I am happy where I am if I don't loose anymore. I went from a size 18-20 to 6 and 8's depending on the style. I still have a round tummy and I'm not sure how to help that. I have had 6 back surgeries and to strengthen my core is hard because of my restrictions. This saddens me because I have family members that still call me tubby. I guess things don't change for some. So, when I look in the mirror I still see that girl I was before when my mid section remains so round. Any suggestions what to do to help this problem... I still make sure I get my Protein in everyday and I drink Water like there is no tomorrow and I also follow everything the nutritional stuff instructed me to do. I know I can't change the options of my family but how do I change my negative opinion of myself when they call me tubby? Just venting on my 2 yr celebration. post-308251-14818138929357_thumb.jpg post-308251-14818139127969_thumb.jpg

Great before and after pics... you look great ...I am scheduled for sleeve surgery 2/8/2017 do you have any regrets??? Or any suggestions for me???

I have zero regrets! I would do this over again if I had to. It is such a life changer! My suggestion would just be to follow your surgeon's post op plan! And when it sucks right after surgery, it will get better! That first month is kind of rough even more mentally than physically. It is normal. Come to this forum often for support! Good luck.

You look great girl!! same here I follow all the docs instructions and I lost 90 pnds in 9 months now been 2 yrs and my weight still 116 pnds

never regrets!!!

I'm scheduled for 2/8/17 too! You're the first person I've seen with the same date as me. ????

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
