Suddenly very hungry...

Recommended Posts

I am 8 weeks post op. Suddenly this week, I am very hungry. My usual AM premier Protein shake wears off very quickly, and I need food. It's not acid, but real hunger. I've been eating yogurt, cottage cheese, veggie burger, banana. Is this hunger here to stay? I've also been craving sweets and salt. Odd!! Thx!

I'm four weeks post op or just about and struggled with this... talked to my nut and she had me add in slow burning carbs and light carbs like Melba toast, Beans, peas. Hummus wasa crackers etc and that has helped a great deal

I would skip the premier Protein and go to a 100% whey Protein isolate. Whichever brand you prefer.

And how do you know it isn't Acid? I had it horribly and it actually was acid.. One Zantac and within 20 min the "pain" was gone...

That was my experience.

Okay.

Tough love here...

Get over it. Period. You don't eat that crap any longer. Period.

Just saying what you NEED to hear..may not be what you WANT to hear.

Solution??? ( cuz I'm not going to dish it out without a helpful hint...)

Water. Lots of it.

Walk, run, bike, do some kind of cardio.

Call an old friend who you want to catch up with and get your mind off food by engaging in a lovely conversation.

DO NOT SIT DOWN and watch tv.

Clean house, like DEEP CLEAN a closet or something.

Just keep busy AWAY from food.

Are you able to eat dense Protein yet? I disagree with the "slow burning carbs" thing as carbs just make me crave more carbs.

chicken, eggs, cheese, almonds, tuna, shrimp... I love a piece of deli meat and cheese rolled up. Beef Jerky, hummus with veggies...

Any of these should help the salt cravings. For sweet? SF pudding is my go to.

I should have specified she primarily emphasized slow burning carbs like Beans, humus, butter Beans. Limas, black eyed peas, ...for some reason I thought slow burning carbs automatically indicated those kinds of foods but I'm not sure now, I'm diabetic and it was always told to me to eat them but I dropped it all after surgery and was hungry all the time despite protonix so NUT said add the slow burning carbs like above back in... and I do eat a Melba toast or wasa cracker after I got there permission but those aren't slow burning carbs, there just healtier carbs and it's worked to stop the hunger issue in its tracks for me although I worry about it slowing my weight loss so time will tell

If you're craving salt, how about pickles? Much healthier choice.

@@ButterflywarriorI was 6-9 months out before I could hit my Protein goals. I definitely didn't have room for empty carbs like Melba toast or crackers of any type.

really!!?? That concerns me bc I keep wondering if what I'm experiencing is normal or not... I've read here from others that tgey felt hungry alot u til they hit the final phase and then things were fine but I noticed ppl in my support group often complain about not being able to drink 8-12oz of Protein Drink in a brief amount of time or taking over a hour or more to drink it

I'm able to drink mine right down in around 10-15 minutes..

Meals, I take 20 min to slowly chew and swallow but it takes more then four bites to fill me so that irks me.. ..

I get all of my Protein in easily supplementing with one shake a day

And before I added slow burning carbs and crackers, I felt hungry and I dobt think it's head hunger.. I tried Water distraction...my tummy talked so told my NUT and she suggested tge carbs si now I have one snack with wasa cracker and hummus or Melba and hummus and one of my meals, I included some sort of Beans peas butter beans...

It isn't a lot by any means but it has stopped the hunger pangs

Still, it scares me a little when I listen to others struggling to eat, get enough protein, etc when I seem to have quite tge opposite problem

My only struggle is getting in enough Water between meals atm.. huge issue

Any tips or thoughts on this....maybe I need to call my surgeons office and complain some more bc I dobt want to slow my weight loss ...

I'm hungry too, but a small meal makes it go away. When it doesn't, and my body says, "You're hungry," my response is, "So what? What does that have to do with anything?" I don't eat because I'm hungry. I eat because I need the nutrition

Try some different Protein shakes or products, eat something with more Fiber, but bottom line is get your Protein requirement, don't exceed your calorie allotment, and if you're still hungry, tough it out. Hunger is the physical sensation of losing weight.

Nailed it. I don't eat because I THINK I'm hungry.

What food stage are you in? You're not eating much dense Protein.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
