Just got revision from sleeve to bypass!

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved in February of 2014 and had my revision to RNY on Nov 14th, 2016, My GERD was so severe that even Water gave me heartburn. Acid was always coming up into my esophaugus causing me to choke and cough. I had to carry a bronchial dialater with me everywhere. I had taken so much medication and it was no longer working for me. My surgeon was afraid I was developing ulcers and the possibility of cancer was increasing. She talked me into having the RNY. I had a few problems with it and ended up staying in the hospital for a week. I've been home for a week and a half and still having complications. Definitely not as easy as the sleeve was. The good thing is....not one it of reflux or heartburn and I no longer wake up at night choking. I had no problem getting the insurance to approve the revision since it was for health issues. My surgeon's office handled everything and the approval went through in a week. Good luck.

Yes. I revised from VSG to RNY on 7/1 to resolve my severe acid reflux that began after my sleeve surgery

How are you feeling? How much weight have you lost?

Sorry, I just saw this. I had gained back about 12-15 lbs because the only thing that provided any relief was crackers. I've lost that weight and 7 lbs more. I'm down to my lowest weight. My surgeon told me I wasn't likely to lose a significant amount of weight. It's been slow going.

I am only 5 months out from gastric sleeve. I go on Tuesday for revision to gastric bypass. I'm very nervous. I had surgery in the summer so I didn't have to miss work (I'm a teacher). Unfortunately, with an hourglass stricture and a pouch above it holding my food, I am throwing up undigested food. I'm freaking out about the recovery. I only plan to take a week off of work because I'm still a newer teacher without a lot of leave. The note my doctor gave me to bring in states 2-6 weeks. Ugh! I had no pain after sleeve. They said it should be a similar recovery. It wasn't for you guys? We need our own forum for sleeve to bypass!!!

Hi. I actually had a revision from Gastric Plication (2014) to RNY on Nov 28. I'm five days out. The plication had caused a lot of problems. It went horribly wrong. Caused a bulging and a blockage. A lot of tissue died. I also had severe reflux that caused erosions, ulcers and increased my risk for esophageal cancer. There was also a hernia. I'm so glad I had this revision and I regret being foolish enough to have had the plication. The pain from the RNY is not as bad and the nausea is WAY better than the first surgery. As far as weight, all I know at this poinis that I lost 4.4 lbs from after RNY day of surgery to next day. I'm still on Clear liquids, but added Protein drinks today. I'm sure I've lost more weight, but not going to check until post-op class on Tuesday. Have had diarrhea since yesterday and took an Imodium a while ago which doesn't seem to have helped yet! It's hard figuring out how much I can drink and how long I have to wait in-between. Just trying to sip every few minutes now.

I have the same situation. I was sleeved Nov 2014 and I now have really bad acid reflux and heartburn all the time. Not sure how to go about seeing if I qualify through my insurance for a revision. I went through True Results and they aren't even open for business anymore. Really frustrating!!!

Try your local hospitals in the area they should have a Bariatric team.but before that look for a PCP and maybe he can order you an upper g.i. to make sure your digestive track is good. Or call your insurance and ask about the specifics of your Bariatric plan maybe they can.help refer you to a specialist. I hope you feel better !!

Shauna you might want to start your own thread with this question in the bypass section, you will probably get more responses more quickly. GL

Sent from my Z981 using the BariatricPal App Your day is coming in just a couple of weeks. I wish you a lot of luck. I'm 61 so I think the surgery was a little more difficult for me. You should do fine..

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
