Post op diet struggles- Boston MA

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I'm new here and I had my gastric sleeve surgery on 4/25/16. I've recently been struggling and I feel like my Dr. at BWH has been absolutely useless. I can't get an appointment and I just really need more support. My diet has been tumbling backwards and I've lost my self control around sugar. My portions are all still extremely small but I eat so many times a day and it's always unhealthy food. I don't even think I'm taking the right Vitamins. I've lost a significant amount of weight but I'm afraid I'm going to stretch my sleeve and start to gain weight again. At this point I'm switching doctors and trying to go to an entirely new program.

Anyone have any advice or can anyone just talk to me? This surgery has changed my life in so many ways and I wouldn't change having it done but I'm scared I'm going to reverse all my hard work.

So sorry, how frustrating. I have heard about people re-setting, just going back to Protein shakes for a week and blended or soft foods, to get back into the groove of things. You have to keep retraining yourself, old habits try to take over and having surgery is nothing I want to do again, and I am sure you do not either. Are you under any underlying stress? take time to reevaluate why you are doing what you are doing. I know I am insulin resistant, eating carbs, though I like them, never makes me feel satisfied, and more does not help. High Protein meals make me feel very satisfied and that makes it easier to resist carbs.

I started a new job that I love, got a new boyfriend, things are going really well in almost every other area of my life. I went through a brief phase of drinking a lot after surgery but I don't drink much anymore. Now it's jut sugar and junk food. chips, ice cream, candy. It's gotten to a point when dumping has been a problem at work and even when I've been driving.

Schedule an appointment with a counselor that specializes in eating issues. If you don't know of one a nutritionist is a good place to ask. You can probably call any nutritionist and ask .

Make sure you know your insurance company coverage and how many visits they will cover before you go. My plan limits me to 14 visits a year so I go once a month and have two sparse for emergencies.

Another alternative is Overeaters Anonymous though you might have to go to a few meeting and different locations to find a group you like. I met a woman at OA that literally changed my life.

The best way to stop sugar cravings is to stop sugar (or severely limit) and carbs found in white stuff like crackers and bread. All that stuff is processed in your body differently, and causes spikes in insulin and cravings for more, more, more!

I'm almost 2.5 years out, and when I find myself off the sugar wagon like this past Halloween when I felt the need to finish the leftover bag of Kit Kats, I go strictly Protein (mostly chicken because it fills me up very quickly) and veggies and lots of Water for a few days until I feel the sugar cravings subside. Then I just continue with the non processed food, high protien diet that got me to goal and keeps me there. I always concentrate on protien first, drink lots of Water, and that seems to help keep me satisfied once the cravings have subsided. It's not easy to get back on track, but very doable! You can do it!

St. Elizabeths in Brighton has a good program, try getting an appointment there so they can get you back on track????

Aggiemae, where do you find an OA group?

Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Google "find an OA meeting"

https://oa.org/find-a-meeting/?type=0&country=United%20States&state=MA&city=Amherst&sort=ASC&distance=75&lat=42.6057805&longit=-71.54865619999998&zip=01450&limit=100&submit=true

Nearest one to you is in Amherst, that's pretty far from you but they have phone meetings where several people group chat and in someplace on line that too.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
