Post Sleeve Surgery Change in Taste Buds

Recommended Posts

Post surgery, my taste buds have changed and certain foods don't taste the same as they did before my Sleeve surgery. Has anyone else experienced this change?

I cant tolerate most artifical sweeteners anymore. McD's soft serve tasted like greasy blech. Jello sugar free chocolate mousse, that I used to love, had a weird taste and a texture I could no longer stand.

Mine have. I don't like things that are super sweet anymore...used to love it, but now it doesn't appeal to me. The biggest thing I noticed is when I drink liquids, they HAVE to be ICE COLD. anything room temp is gross.

1.5 years post surgery

I cant tolerate Milk anymore.

I can't stand sweet foods but I think that's because I haven't had them in a long time. I tried a sip of pop a whole ago. It tasted like thick Syrup. So gross ????

Many foods taste too salty.

I also got used to Protein shakes thankfully. Before surgery it took everything I had to get the down.

I had a couple Halloween chocolate minis and the chocolate tasted terrible -- like cheap, waxy crap chocolate. Had a bite of cake with frosting at a party last night, tasted gross, waxy (frosting) and too sweet. I haven't had a ton of sweet stuff, just a bite here and there, but it either tastes off or wayyyyy too sweet.

I am noticing all the salt in prepared foods, too. Now that I'm eating so clean, if I eat anything processed it's hugely salty to me now.

Pasta sits like a lead balloon and isn't worth the empty calories, so that's a win for me to not like it anymore.

I had a saltine last night and it was disgusting paste in my mouth. I'm like, how/why did I eat crackers so much before?

Mostly I'd say it's the sweet stuff I can't tolerate, which is fine by me. I'm thrilled my body is self-selecting healthier options.

I never had a sweet tooth but now anything sweet turns my stomach. I really think it's because of pre op and all those Meal Replacement shakes. I really really hated that stage lol.

My biggest taste bud change is I don't crave breaded fried foods anymore. I stayed away from breaded fried foods after the band in 2009 but I still craved them. Now after the revision, I prefer grilled fish and roasted onions vs breaded fish and onion rings. I'm wondering if it's because I'm just not "starving" anymore and therefore it's easier to make better choices. I'm really not sure. Either way, I'm so glad that switch is turned off.

Yep. I used to like super-sweet BBQ Sauce and ketchup. I am finding that stuff makes me queasy now, and am preferring flavors like mustard which I used to like a tiny bit but not as a primary flavor. I'm finding that lots of the super-sweet things not only make me queasy but I'm not liking the taste as much.

Just one last thought, after drinking liquids (Coffee, Ice Tea, Sodas) with artificial sweeteners, I get an unpleasant after-taste.

Thank you all for your kind support!

Enjoy and be well.....Si

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
