Period, constipation, stall or all of the above?

Recommended Posts

I was 338 on 10/30. On 11/1, I was 341.4. I dodnt worry about it because i the last couple of days had been closer to 1000 cals because of our anniversay and because I hadnt "eliminated".

On 11/2, I was 340.6. I also had some spotting. I have mirena and havent period in years, so this was a bit weird. But the spotting has stopped.

Today, I was 339.8. Its going down a bit but I realized the last time I remember having a decent size "elimination" was Saturday.

Do I consider this the three week stall (4 weeks post op yesterday), some psuedo period or Constipation?

If stall or constipatio, what do you guys suggest to "break through"? I would really like to .

Thanks

Are you walking? That's the single best thing to keep your bowels moving, honestly, as long as you're getting your fluids.
Probably TMI, but I walk almost every night after dinner...by the end of 2 miles, I usually need my bathroom :)

Ive been getting around 60oz of fluids. I have a hard time remembering to drink. I was always a volume drinker, 16-24oz at a time a few times a day primarily with meals.

The fluxuations in weight dont usually bother me. I have been daily weighing because i jumped my cals at the advice of my bariatric nurse and i wanted to keep track of the results.

Dairy is my go to food. I use fairlife milk and genpro for Breakfast and oikos yougurt for lunch. They are my primary Protein sources during work hours.

For the past 13years i have had cronic diarrhea as a side effect of gallbladder removal, so i have never dealt with long term Constipation. Its a new issue for me.

A coworker suggested raisins.

I was planning on walking the dogs (rather than fetch in the backyard) so hopefully that will help.

Water/fluid is key. Even if you use something like Miralax it really only works with lots of Water.

Keep sipping. Staying hydrated, getting in all if your Protein, and staying off the scale are the best things to do right now.

Milk of magnesia has helped me deal with any bathroom issues. (If you use it, just take a sip or two and not a complete dose. I learned that lesson the hard way the first time...)

And the "three week stall" is quite real. I hit it, on schedule, right at the beginning of week 3. I lost about 2 pounds total over the next 2 weeks, and then it started to pick up again. I've lost about 10 pounds in the last 10-11 days, so it doesn't last forever.

Feel better.

Careful with raisins! I only say this because I had a horrible time with dried apricots - hard to digest.

I had a second surgery 5 weeks after my sleeve for female concerns - and haven't lost or gained since. (2 weeks). Who knows - I just keep following my plan.

Best of luck - hang in there!

During pre-op, I was using Premier Protein shakes from costco.

At 30g Protein each x 3 per day, plus 5g of Fiber (a bulking agent in stool, not necessarily something that will help stools pass through easier) I became royally constipated very quickly.

I took a senna laxative I had in the cupboard, which did nothing.

I asked my pharmacist mom what she would recommend (she is virulently anti-drugs - prescription, OTC or off the shelf) and she recommended Magnesium Citrate supplements. Magnesium is a natural stool softener, and it is one of the 4 most important elements that must be balanced in the body (Sodium, potassium, Calcium and magnesium).

I took them for a few days and VOILÀ! No problems since.

@@rolosmom7 I had shoulder surgery in Sept, about 3 months after my VSG. My weight loss has just really picked up again...horrible timing for me but I trashed my shoulder loading a kayak on top of our vehicle. The surgery and recovery has really eaten into my honeymoon period with my sleeve :(

Ugh! Sorry in the shoulder injury and the weight loss impact. Glad it's starting to pick back up for you!

In regards to spotting, I have a contraceptive injection which stops periods and I've spotted every day since surgery 10/25... I think it's just hormones trying to work out what is going on!

@@Sammy1991 Your body stores estrogen in your excess fat, so when you start burning it, you mobilize all that stored estrogen. It can cause you to have breakthrough bleeding and affect your cycle.

I had completed menopause, so over 12 months with no menses, and I've had a period (and ovulated) every month since my surgery

I hadn't had a period in 2+ years and had an absolute nightmare. It's crappy, but normal.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
