That's what I tried today. I had a piece of toast this morning and some potatoes with dinner. I'm afraid to gain, but hopefully it will do the opposite and trigger some weight loss again. Anyone have any idea of how long it typically takes to see a change? Like a day or two? A week? Two weeks?

Thank you all for your responses, it really does help to have a great community who has been through it all!

I have no idea what type surgery you had. All I can tell you is what I've been doing which has been working for me.

I had the bypass in May when I began I weighed 377 I now way 304.

I keep a daily food journal, keeping track of my daily protien intake and my daily calories.

I keep my daily calories at 800 and my protiens at 60 they at vary up are down a little but i keep it as close as humanly possible to those numbers and so far so good.

You need to incorporate exercise! Cardiovascular and Strength. If you do this, your eating will fall in place. You are over thinking your food intake. Just eat clean, get your Protein and vegetables daily, and dont eliminate good carbs. Your body will tell you how much to eat! I eat 6-7.5 ounces/per meal total! Three Snacks per/day...and drink approx. 80-96 ozs of water/day; but I work out 6 days/week hard. My results are From my lifestyle change in the gym....my sleeve is my TOOL helping me reach my weight loss goals! STOP OBSESSING ABOUT FOOD...RISE AND GRIND IN THE GYM! TRUST ME, THE WEIGHT WILL COME OFF!

Toast & potatoes taking the physical and calorie space that Protein should be in.

IT takes momentum for most people.

Cutting out the nonessential foods and getting the Protein and fat in......and exercising......while staying well hydrated.....WILL yield results in a few days.

What are you doing on the other side of the equation.....the calorie burning side ? Any formal exercise ? It can surely amplify the weight loss.

Toast and potatoes are going to make your liver larger and you won't see a loss from that. If you were going to try carb cycling there are far better choices. Your diet isn't low carb enough to begin with that you would need to carb cycle. People that need to carb cycle (and that is still even debatable) are doing 20 and under in carbs, which high Protein. Your carbs to Protein are almost equal.

@@johnny207 You don't have to go to the gym to lose weight, study after study has proven it. Exercise is great for health, but it isn't necessary for weight loss and the stress and anxiety the gym creates for some people is counter productive for weight loss.

People who don't exercise while losing weight are more likely to lose a higher percentage of muscle while losing weight. Your body is pretty indiscriminate about burning muscle or fat for energy when you are creating a calorie deficit. Our high protein diets will help some, but building and strengthening muscle along the way helps a lot too. I think when most people are trying to lose weight, their intent is to lose FAT, but without proper nutrition and activity, you can be losing a lot of muscle as well, which isn't the goal.

You run, and I seriously doubt you do it all in the gym.

People keep pushing the gym like that is the only way to work out. I exercise but I do not go to the gym. I have lost a ton of fat and retained my muscle mass without going to the gym and I have the scientific proof to back it up, I'm not just talking out my ass. I haven't ruined my metabolism, and it is still working normally, again I have the proof the back it up.

I walk and ride my bike and I never set foot in the gym. Exercising outdoors in a real environment is more challenging than mimicking actual activity by going to the gym.

I am pro-exercise, it just doesn't have to be in the gym.

I do exercise. I strength train 3x a week for 30 minutes and cardio for 20 minutes a day. My carb intake never exceeds 40 grams, but I never get that much in. My diet consists of pretty much all Protein. Yes, I know that the VSG is just a tool, but working out and eating 900 calories a day should yield a weight loss. If I didn't have the surgery and was eating and exercising like this, I would lose weight. So the frustrating part is why not now?

@@debd80 I've been reading this forum for a while and can tell you that anytime someone has this same concern - those that have been successful say that you need more calories from Protein and veggies, healthy fats. I know you said you had conflicting information and all the info you received probably made things worse. I would try increasing protein/calories - make sure you are drinking a lot of non-calorie liquids and see what happens. Let us know.

Ah! I see what you are saying now. Yes, I agree about the gym. I haven't had a gym membership in years and years. I work out at home or I run outside. I have a little home gym set up in my finished basement with a treadmill, stationary bike, tv/dvd player, exercise mat, and adjustable free weights. The gym is great for some people because it forces them into a routine where they have to GO somewhere to work out and can avoid the distractions and temptations at home. I would think it would be especially useful for people with kids, since it offers them a chance to "get away". But for others, the gym can be very intimidating and/or expensive and inconvenient. Everyone has to figure out how to fit exercise into their own lives.

Well, I will just reiterate that you really need to up your Water and calories then. With that level of activity, you are getting nowhere near enough Water and are likely getting too few calories. Aim for calorie-dense Protein sources like cheese and nuts. If you are going to do carbs, have them 30-45 minutes before your cardio workouts. They can help fuel your cardio and you will burn them off before they get stored as glycogen.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
